So is it safe to assume that most of Miller's work will now be made into a movie?

I think you're trying to make people forget that you claimed 300 would do "Serenity" numbers :D

Here, I'll remind them:

This is going to shock the geek world and do "Serenity" numbers, so he shouldn't really worry about any water-cooler talk...

Definitely kick-ass. Good to see quality win out for a change. I still maintain that this will be extremely frontloaded, because this isn't the type of movie where fans wait for Word of Mouth. But this bodes very well for Sin City 2!

Wild Hogs, though.....

I ate my crow in the first thread, not this silly & unnecessary duplicate one! I have no problem being incredibly wrong on this... it's just as fun to be wrong as it is to be right sometimes, especially when you're just bullshitting with friends, even interweb friends.

In the old Serenity BO threads, people would retort to saying Serenity did badly by saying "You're ignoring the international BO and DVDs!" So I say that you are ignoring these!

......it will beat it by Monday morning ;)

I'm not surprised this did better than Serenity. It's had pretty awesome trailers playing nonstop all over the place and the concept is really accessible.

300 dudes fight a horde of thousands.

How much more simple can it get?

I saw the Serenity trailer about 3 times before the movie came out and couldn't tell you a darn thing about the movie other than it had spaceships in it.

Swords and armies movies are hard to predict though, it's not exactly a big genre.

I think the big difference between the two though is the marketing. Except for the poster which said you wouldn't enjoy it ( :) ), they had these really striking images. Serenity had a bunch of people in the distance, with a young teen with axes in her hands. To me, the four in the background (Mal, Jayne, Kaylee and Zoe with guns) would have been a better focus on the poster, making it not look like "The creator of Buffy does Buffy in space!".

I was excited for Serenity but I have to admit that a little bit of it died when I saw that poster. Whoever thought that would sell needs a strong kick in the nuts.

I would say that, other than Directorial Quality and the subject matter, 300 isn't a whole lot better than Wild Hogs.

Zodiac, Black Snake Moan, The Host are all much better films. 300 just had teh CGI blood, OMG.

I just think people are being blindsided to how a bad a film 300 is by the purtiness.

It's pure shit on practically every level except for design and a few cool shots.

If you hate it, why are you posting in two of it's threads about how MUCH you hate it? :-?

You've said your peace, we all understand you hate it. Most of us here liked it or are very excited to see it.

I liked it a lot. I think I'm peeing testosterone now, and constantly feel like kicking people from great heights or fighting fucking rhinos. I hope this teaches Hollywood that more people will see faithful translations of graphic literature more than awful renditions of characters from hack directors (I'm talking to you Mark Steven Johnson, even if I did love Simon Birch).

For me, the best thing about 300 making this kind of money, is that it blows away the notion that R rated movies can't make blockbuster money. In a recent Conan the Barbarian thread, I mentioned that I wish there were more movies today like Conan, violent and sexy R rated adult fantasy movies. Maybe 300's success will open that door.

It had a good opening weekend, let's not get all crazy and start calling it a "blockbuster" here. "Night at the Museum" is a blockbuster. It made $30 mil. its opening weekend, but it's gone on to almost $245 mil. at this point. 300 will probably make about 50-65 percent of that in total, and the main reason is the ratings. If it's lucky and follows Ice Age 2's pattern, than in will finish at slightly less than $200. But, given the R-rating, I think that's a stretch.

But I've been wrong about this movie before... :scared:

lol. Yeah, I'm not sure your predictions about 300 carry much weight right now. ;)

But if you are right and it makes 50-65 per cent of Night at the Museum (what a weird comparison) then it still makes 120 to 160 million dollars. How is that not a blockbuster? What is the cut off?

I think it'll do at least 150 mil. making it one of the biggest R films of all time.

That's not really an understatement. It was just really wrong.

An understatement would be be saying something that's obviously true but considerably downplayed. An understatement would be saying "I think the box office returns for the month of May will be fairly strong," when you've got three of the hugest franchises opening that month.

The only way massive amounts of heterosexual men will go see a film full of half naked, sweaty, muscular men, is if those half naked, sweaty, muscular men are killing each other.
Imagine how much (more)money Brokeback Mountaing would've grossed if it had the characters wear helmets, shields and spears, and engaged in bloody battle...

quality?

not so much.
it has some good imagery (from miller) but it really doesn't have much depth.
of course, i also think the whole sparta culture was pretty retarded so that could certainly be affecting my judgement.

i'll admit that it was a hoot seeing mcnulty all buffed up and in a toga.
