What's typical or rather what do you pay?
In Tx I paid 24.99/month with a large upfront payment and yearly contract.
I currently pay 40.00/month with no upfront payment or contract to one of the larger gyms in the area...It seems like this is high to me but when I looked at their primary competitor they wanted close to 100$/month with 200$ up front and 1 yr contract.

high membership fees are part of the reason that i invested in building my own home gym a few years ago. the two gyms i had to choose from ranged from $50 to $60 per month with annual contracts required.
i got sick of paying $600+ a year only to have most of the equipment already occupied when i went to the gym.

It's $100/month for a dual membership for my wife and me at our local gym. It's a big place and it has a pool, so I don't mind paying a little extra. No upfront payment, tho'.

I pay $16.50 a month at Bally's and can go to any branch of it anywhere, anytime. It was a family add-on deal they offer every so often - I paid the first year up front on a credit card and am now paying monthly at the front desk.
I consider $35 a month to be my upper limit on a gym fee. Though I wonder if you meet a better class of person in one of those places that charges $100/month.

I pay 20 bucks a month for my gym, and this includes
Free guests
a second membership for someone that lives with me
Free Tanning (not that i'd ever use it)
The gym is open 24 hours a day too, so that's nice.

i pay $35 a month at 24 hour fitness in vegas. i used to pay $25 but that only let me go to the location that i originally signed up, which ended up being an inconvenience since i generally go right after work and i work somewhere different everyday.

For a big city, $40 isn't too bad. Are you getting the exact same services at the competitor gym? A huge jump like that usually means they give you something else of added value (like use of an in-door pool). If its exactly the same, talk to the manager at the competitor gym. Tell him exactly what you want (i.e. no up front costs and lower monthly fees). Also mention that you're getting a great deal across the street and you were hoping that he would match that deal. No harm in asking!
If you're happy where you are and you plan to stay for the foreseeable future, ask the manager of your gym if he'd be willing to come down in price (say to $30/month) if you sign a contract.
I pay $71/month at NYSC. :( More than half the time their sauna/steam room doesn't work or smells like shit!! The only real benefit for me is that it's 2 blocks away...so nice easy walk.

I pay $40 a month at the YMCA. The only downside is that pervy old men stare at my ass in the shower. Thank fuck they're adding stalls soon.

Everybody knows that the YMCA is a hangout for NAMBLA recruiters.

everything is the same with the exception of the more expensive gym offering a squash court which they don't have at the location I use (although I do have access to one if I want to go to another location)
the 40$/month is due to my employer its not going to get cheaper
I have access to a pool(s) through my university affiliation, so that's not really an issue for me
