Hi, welcome to the all new, all different X-Books mega [dramatic echo]thread[/dramatic echo]!
This is a place to discuss all things X-Men related, being the comics or whatever crosses our minds!
I'll try to post reviews every week (i read all the x-books but the wolverine ones, but i'm sure some one will cover those).
So...
Come in, put up your feet, review, talk...and most of all enjoy yourselves!
The Jack Rabbitt

I shall also attempt to review most X-books every week.
Only ones that I don't read are the Wolvie books and (more often than not) New Excalibur.

This weeks books:
(i'm writing these some 15 hours after reading them)
X-Factor-4.5 out of 5 stars (or should they be "x's"?)the story continues form last months issue with Theresa and Monet in France and Madrox looking for his dupes. The mian story shows Jamie discovering that not only has one of his dupes become a preacher, but this dupe (calling himself john) has a wife and a young child. Jamie has to face the new dilema of whether or not to absorb this dupe, or have the scared dupe kill the original. Meanwhile in France our two chicas break free of prison after crucifying the murder from last issue. The stumble across a young girl whos parents both died in the attacks and Monet decides to kid nap her. In the shadows we see a hooded figure with glowing red eyes. the girls make it back to the states only to be greated by cop cars coming to intercept their plane. Suddenly the cop cars disapear. The hooded man is ther as well. but the girls are none the wiser.
Jamie decides to let John go be his own man.
New Excallibur-3 out of 4 The second part of a two part story. lst issue Nocturne suddenly had a stroke and woke up not being able to communicate. This issue picks up with the therapy sessions that happen afterwards. Which are going slowly. On top of it Nocturne seems to be hallucinating (sp). Noctunre can no onger control her right side. Still has trouble talking and can not remember names (even her own) a fact that seems to hurt Cain. And Dazzler gives her a sponge bath...Sage stays with Nocturne what seems to be 24/7 eventualy convincing nocturne to posess her as parth of the therapy. Which she reluctantly does, but has a grand ol' time doing it. She leanrs that Sage can still block out her memories and such as well. Eventualy Nocturne looses controll of her right side again and the posession ends. Cap and Sage remind her that she is part of a family now. Wisom helps in her pt as well. We also get to see sage with her hiar down and dressed like a 20 something year old girl...
the issue is probably Claremont reflecting on his own health issues and the need to fight to regain control of one's own life. (anybody ever notice that he writes him self into female characters a lot...?) The issue's negative points is it's complete reversal of tone set up by tierry(sp). Where as he had them bickering, Claremont has the team all shiny happy people with each other.
X-Men-4 out of 5 Mike Carey continues to bring on his kick ass writing. We find out that the big bad of this series wanted to have rouge's absorbtion of memories, but instead he only absorbs their powers (he does this via a virus he created). And he thinks he's come up with a virus to fix this, and his test subject is a scantily clad rouge. Sabertooth lands and begins to rip apart the lab staff. Cable and Cannonball find out that they cannot controll their ship. Cable teleports to the battle (shouldn't deadpool end up with him?) and cannonball lives up to his name. Mystique we find out has survived last issue and has been running around the complex. Overhearing the big bad's orders to a lacky she takes over the lacky's image and frees mastermind and sentinal. The team meet up and fight the new guy, accidently adding more and more powers to his arsenal (he boasts that he has at least 4 types of invunerability). Cable orders Sabertooth to strike, to which the big bad laughs, sabertooth decides to tell him the plan. Sabertooth's healing factor would rid the human of hs virus, and it does quickly. After debating who gets to kill him, mastermind steps up and makes the guy get stuck in his own mind (in classic fashion). Creed remarks that there is something dead inside her. Rouge then passes out. Sam wants to call back their ship and get her home, but cable states that there isn't enough time, rouge is about to die!)
is anybody reading wolverine or wisdom?
we will also need some one to review ultimate x-men, since i plan on going back to trades on that soon)
I read; X-Men, Uncanny, New X-men, New Excallibur (for now), Cable/Deadpool, Astonishing, X-23, X-Factor

I love the X-men, without the cartoons or movies I wouldn't be reading comics.
Also! A question I've been meaning to ask for a while, does anyone know what happened to Jubilee in Wolverine Origins? She's one of my favorite characters, and I'm wondering if this could set up the supposed big return of her.

I just read X-Factor 16. A few thoughts:
Damn fine issue. PAD has been writing some perfect characterization for Madrox in this series and that continues in this issue. 5 out of 5 X's
I was very glad to see Jamie let the dupe go free at the end of the issue. I honestly couldn't tell if he was going to or not. There is so much potential built into the plotline of Jamie sending dupes out into the world and I think PAD has only begun with their stories. Shit, every issue could simply be about Jamie meeting another dupe and I'd be perfectly happy.
The Monet/Siryn sub-plot moves along nicely. I'm not too sure who the mysterious baddy is lurking in the background, though. And the red balloon joke was completely lost on me. Still great stuff.

Really? I thought it was fun. And frankly I was tired of the piss-poor portrayal of Wisdom over in New Excalibur. This book is a nice change of pace as far as that's concerned. And the art is killer.

i've been rereading x-factor vissionaries peter david volume 1, and the stuff with madrox goes way back.
the red balloon bit was a joke about a french movie stereotype. There is this classic story that involves a red baloon floating around.

I've been reading Astonishing, Uncanny, Carey's X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, Exiles, Wolverine and Origins.
I'm afraid the only titles I'm really enjoying are Astonishing and, to a lesser extent, Exiles and Origins.
I'm thisclose to dropping Ultimate, adjectiveless, and Wolverine as Kirkman is really doing nothing for me and Loeb's first issue was a big batch of nicely drawn nothing new. Carey's stuff isn't for me, I guess.
I really want to like Brubaker's run but it just hasn't grabbed me yet. I'm looking forward to the Morlock storyline though.
Exiles has been consistent fun and I'm enjoying Claremont so far.
Whoops, didn't really mean to come off as a big negative nelly here. I am an old-school X-fan and I may be finally outgrowing the titles.
I probably enjoy Astonishing so much since it is so blatantly nostalgic for the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne/Smith period that I hold so close to my heart.
Whoops, work meeting. Gotta go...

I have mixed feelings regarding the x-crossover. On one hand it'll be cool to see a huge threat that the x-teams need to respond to but on one hand I don't want a repeat of how it used to be where every summer there was a X-crossover just for the sake of a crossover. Granted there hasn't been one since Dreams End which was six years ago.

99% of the time I'd agree with you, but with these creative teams, I honestly don't see how it could possibly go bad. It'll have to be solid, at the very least.

I hope we'll see a lot of good character interaction in the crossover rather than just wall to wall action. I really enjoyed House of M for that reason.
The new X-crossover is slated to be more of the old-style book to book to book crossover with each creative team doing a chapter in their own book, isn't it? Those are tricky to pull off, but hopefully these guys are all working closely in concert on it.

I mostly stick to AXM, Ult.XM (although I've dropped that book like a bad habit recently), and read the main X-books in passing. I've been following the storylines in both Uncanny and adjectiveless. 196 was... okay, not great. I liked the resolution and the way Sabretooth defeated the guy though.
Oh, and bairdy, it's Rogue, not rouge. That's a makeup. :p

Cool! X-Men thread! I read Astonishing, Uncanny, Exiles, new Excalibur (although it was yesterday before I realized I hadn't picked up the latest issue), X-Factor, new X-Men, X-23, and Ultimate. I despise the art and writing on Adjectiveless and the Wolverine books are same old same old so nope, not interested. Ultimate is pretty bad most months but theg ood issues make buying it worthwhile and to be honest, i really dislike Astonishing and only buy it 'cause I enjoy disliking it.
Any leaks on the X-over? From the one Mike Carey book I've ever enjoyed (the annual) we have Exodus and Mister Sinister but seriously, there are 198 mutants left. How good can it be?
If we're picking X-Men, the obvious one for me would be Northstar but I don't want to go that route, even if he has been my avatar at times.
Oh, and I know I shouldn't like Wisdom but I do. Very little of it has made any sense at all but I'm very entertained while clueless so it's cool
And why the worries about people following this thread? I know I'm still relatively new here but you guys are always interesting to read, even (especially?) when you derail a thread.

Oh, and I know I shouldn't like Wisdom but I do. Very little of it has made any sense at all but I'm very entertained while clueless so it's cool

Part of it is the lame ass, let's have Cable, Mystique, and Sabretooth back. I know most of that's not his choice but there was no reference to the fact it's been done before and didn't work worth shit. His dialog also feels flat to me and his version of a mystery isn't to leave you clues, it's to simply not tell you things. I really disliked Neverwhere too. Then there's the art. Bachalo's stuff is unsuited (IMHO) to crowd scenes and it doesn't help that the coloring of his issues I did pick up that it looks like they add mud to the colors used on him. Ramos just leaves me cold.
And you want cursed? Your threads might not go anywhere but no one kills a thread like me!

i agree on the art. I haven't liked Bachalo is years, and Ramos isn't my cop of tea. But I disagree with your oinion of Carey, I love his dialogue it feels real to me. As for his team...my favorite characters tend to be characters that are trying to redeem themselves.

But Claremont ISN'T writing Exiles. It's either a PSylocke series or a continuation of the Roma threads he weaved through X-Men years ago. The art's on the upswing tho'. I've thought it amateurish looking for some time and since Claremont took over it's hundreds times better.
Favorite Exile? Spider-Man 2099!

It's not all Psylocke, his use of the rest of the cast shows a respect for the prior stories that I wasn't expecting. And if he's reconciling Exiles' version of the multiverse with the classic Excalibur's version of the multiverse, that can only be a good thing.
Now, if Psylocke somehow replaces Blink as leader, I will be a little peeved.
Edit:
Favorite Exile: MORPH. They better fix him. :(

I am hooked on Exiles and have been since day one. I can't help it (especially now that one of my fav characters of all time is on the team - Spidey 2099  ). Claremont's run is shaping up to be decent, if a bit by-the-books, and I have no problem with that. I can even bet by the fact that Claremont brought along a pet character (Psylocke) as he is wont to do.
And I have my fingers crossed that he'll fix the Morph mess.

Hell yeah, brother, Spidey 2099 all the way.
And lets be honest, the concept and character of Roma *is* perfect for the Exiles book. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her being there. As for Psylocke, Claremont always brings along a pet character onto books that he writes. It's something that I've learned to get over.

Damn, looks like i logged off last night about 5 minutes too early as i missed the beginning of this thread.
I've been a hardcore X-Men fan since my earliest days, i'm pretty sure my first real comic purchase(Non-Archie Digest related) was Uncanny X-Men # 222
http://image.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/97792366288.222.gif
It wasn't until the classic Chris Claremont/Jim Lee arc in #273-277 that it became my favorite franchise nowadays it's about a 3 way tie between the X-Books,Spider-Man & Avengers lines.
As for today i'm a strict trade reader but looking at my bookshelve i collect Astonishing X-Men,Uncanny X-Men,X-Men,New Excalibur,Wolverine,Wolverine : Origins,X-Factor and i own the first tpb of Cable & Deadpool and plan to collect the remaining trades. As far as New X-Men goes i need to jump on that train one of these days but my OCD won't let me buy until i have all the previous books starting with the New Mutants re-launch a few years back.
Ultimate X-Men meanwhile i want to start buying those Over-sized Jumbo HC's but until then i've only read a dozen or so issues over the years which i have enjoyed.
Looking forward to shooting the breeze here.

If I'm to understand it correctly, there's only one Mojoverse and therefore only one Longshot. Ergo, our Longshot is the Longshot currently appearing in Exiles.

North Star Joining the X-Teams (damn you Mark Millar!)
I loved that the had a nurse and she was human
No More Havok and Polaris loving
Jubes back on the teams
i was up in the air about some things he was doing, like saying that there were certain classes of mutants that would band together like Dominant Species wolves, beserkers, etc.
i didn't like how his team was back at the mansion where as casey had them roaming the world. And yes the dialogue could be a bit off. And wtf was with Stacy X's skin then just leaving? grrrrrr
Angel's blood was dumb....then again evering abot him has been dumb since his regular wings came back.

casey's run was a lot of fun. And how it should have been. There should be a home team and an away team. the away team stays away form the f'ing school.
there were no heavy hitters (ala collosus, juggernaut or warpath). The team had to use strategy to take down villans (like freezing vanshier as he left). they had a seductress who enjoyed her work. etc. Plus they had Iceman doing an ice like kahmehamia (sp) wave!

Carey is better than Milligan and that's something I never thought I'd say in a million years, especially after Enigma. I lasted I think three issues before I had to bail. I have trouble articulating why. It's a gut thing mostly but the non-mysterious mysteries and the general air of confusion turned me off. Then there was his appearing to worsen an allready bad situation with Northstar (he gets props for undoing everything in the annual but too little, too late for me). The worst part for me is that Mike Carey is so damn fascinating in interviews and I hate that I hate nearly everything he produces!
And was Josh the Guthrie child who had the sonic power in that New Mutants story?
And on a tangent, it annoyed when Claremont decided years back that Banshee couldn't talk and use his sonics at the same time. With his mutant voice box why couldn't he? Ugh.

was he editorialy created as auten claims?
when the writers of New Mutants (/New X-men Mutant Academy bre HoM) were writing do you think they chose to have them, or do you think he was forced down their throats?
I'm going with the latter. Esseiantly he's there but as a back ground, eventualy he kept getting more and more screen time (as a hellion)until he joined the team (new Mutants)...all of a sudden he devoloped a useful power with harmonics...i mean come on what good is a guy who can fly and heal be to a team?

Personal choices for current best X-book? I know there'll be a lot of push for X-Factor but I find it too static and talky. Sure, the art has taken a radical upswing but I still expect that to end any second. No, for me it's New X-Men, a book that I picked up on a whim when Decimation started and was immediately hooked. Great art (but that's in peril, isn't it?) and a superlative writing team have me eager for every issue to come out. Does anyone else arrange their weekly buy pile from least anticipated to most, with one or two can't waits? New X-Men is almost always one of my can't waits. This is a book with consequences and everyone involved makes you feel like these are really kids, not underformed adults. I also like the way it feels as if the writers know how arcs end before they even start the ones before.
And online it feels like no one knows this book exists. Students at Xavier's haven't been this interesting since a Demon Bear attacked Dani Moonstar and the world should be celebrating it!

i honestly read 52 first so i can go play in ray's thread. sometimes I will put everything else in order. Now that this thread is active x-books will be first and for front.
i never read the original new mutants other than what i've caught in trades (Fall of the Mutants-X-tinction agenda) And some of Liefield's stuff (cable's first appearance, deadpool's first (two copies!) and the last issue or two).
But yea I love New X-Men, every month i saw, I'm gonna drop it, then every month i salivate over the new issues. After the X-Over this summer i think i'll do online ordering for it and New Excallibur though

If there's a 52 thread please don't tell me where it is. I have never been as disgusted by a comic (and I survived the 80's and 90's) as I am by the latest issue. The murder and torture of children is NOT entertainment and it also seems to be Geoff Johns' chief contribution to DC of late. I will never pick up another issue of 52, including WW3, and JSA is the only title I plan on reading with his name attached.
'Course, knowing where the WWH thread is might be good. I have some gamma powered negativity I wouldn't mind sharing...

They just came out with two New Mutants Classic trades. They collect number 1-17 I think. The Bill Sienckewicz stuff starts with the next trade (which I assume is coming).
I loved the New Mutants series right up until Claremont stopped writing it, then it kind of went to shit.
The absolute best new mutants stuff is actually in the X-Men/Alpha Flight trade with awesome Art Adams art. Don't know if it's still in print but it's worth tracking down.

What is the Muir island saga?
Is Legion Quest the storyline right before Age of Apocalypse? If so, that is were I initially stopped reading all X-titles until Morisson came one. I remember they actually all had a sort of ending, so I thought I'd pretend they actually DID end since I was losing interest around then.

muir island sage was the final x-over before the 2nd x-men volume began, reuniting x-men, xavier and the original x-factor vs shadow king and the army he controlled on Muir Island.
I only have the first part, and while cheep enough for me to buy the rest, I'd like it all in one volume.

I was disappointed they went from the Legion in New Mutants to the one that casued Age of Apocalypse without much transition. Having a character with four ditinct personalities would have been interesting in aa book full time. 'Course, with Jean Grey popping up more times than bread our of a broken toaster it's a possibilty still...
and I think I've come up with a way to bring Jean back without all the baggage of her last decade or two...

The Shadow King took over David's body in The Muir Island Saga circa 1991,when he was defeated Legion fell into a coma not waking up until 4 years later with his fractured mind healed.
Obviously we all know what happened next.
Hmmm strange i think Emma Frost was in a Coma for the same amount of time now that i think about it. Waking up a few months earlier than Legion but still.

I haven't read the issue myself, so I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but would it possibly be:

But once again, I haven't read the issue in question, so forgive me if my guess makes no sense.

Ah. no discounts on singles, though?

And what about the self loathing which will force you into sinking hundreds of dollars to acquire the singles to keep your collection pure? Meanwhile your compendiums are humming constantly that they are lonely and need more compendium friends...

Has anyone been reading X-Men: First Class?
I wrote it off initially, but I hear it's actually been pretty fun, even re-visiting the Coffee-A-Go-Go.

I have to admit being disappointed by it but that might be because I was also buying something else the writer was doing that was so much more superb. It feels like the characters don't act quite right (but I will admit it's been years since I read the reprinted original stories) and it's not helping that the new costumes have been stuck on them. I like the series well enough but I find myself thinking of it as a Marvel Adventures book rather than a series of untold tales.
Oh, and to prove nothing makes me happy, I've bitched that Civil War and Ultimates' artwork was way too photorealistic. The way the art on XM:FC is stylized annoys me. Oh well. I'm consistent in my inconsistency...

When did Loeb write for the X-books? He said in the interview/panel that he was operating under Harras and that was well before my hiatus from collecting and I cannot place the title or storylines. I have a vague inkling that that it was X-Force related but at my age the memory is the second thing to go...

Actually, Loeb only wrote the first eight or so issues of X-Man. The lion's share goes to Kavanagh.

Newb to the forum, but just thought I'd chime in and say that X-Factor rocks.
I was able to attend PAD's workshop in Chicago last year and it was a great time. His book on writing is pretty good too.
Other than that I only keep up with AXM. The other teams just don't interest me as much.

Here's another thought: Secondary mutation is a crock of shit. The Beast has been mutated, un-mutated, and then re-mutated. Wouldn't his feline aberration most likely be a product of that? The Angel's healing blood? Stupid idea but here again we have an X-Man who was genetically tampered with already. Secondary mutation or further results of his being Death? The blue going away and the dork feathers returning were years after he was Death so why not super healy blood too? Iceman's powers too have been tampered with through the years (remeber that belt he once wore) and Syrin's powers are just the result of increased imagination in their use. Emma Frost might be the only case made for secondary mutation being real. I was using her as an example of it being wrong, because Nova claimed to have caused it, but if Nova only existed as a psychic virus, she couldn't have had any physical effect on Emma. Thoughts?

Just finished New X-Men #35 and I must say that the relationship between Hellion and X-23 is interesting, and Yost and Kyle are actually fleshing these kids' characters out and making them into people, which is the one thing this series needs.
Honestly, this is one of the most exciting comics on the stands today, and Yost/Kyle deliver a well-paced, action paced thrill ride and it feels like an epic action film.
I truly hope at least one or two of these kids eventually graduate to the big leagues. It would really be cool to see David become a tactician for one of the X-Teams, despite being a human now.
