So, I finished the Wisdom mini today. I know not very many people out there bothered to read this mini and it's really too bad. This book was incredible. Great writing, fantastic art, wonderful ending.
Buy the trade, people. Or pick up the singles, if you can. You won't regret it.
I give the whole thing an 8.5/10.

He is completely different in this mini. AKA, he is written well.
I don't think you need to be a Wisdom fan, though it certainly won't hurt.

The only ONLY problem I had with the mini was the characterization of Alistaire Stuart. Seemed way off, to me. But, if you don't know who that is, it surely wouldn't bother you.

Not quite as good as the recent Union Jack mini-series either.

I have a feeling he's going to be a Spider-Man writer. Not necessarily one of the new ones coming after One More Day, but someday.
I'm really looking forward to his World War Hulk:X-Men mini (with Andrea Divito!!!!). If that goes well, maybe he'll get some more work in the X-universe....

That WWH: X-Men mini is the PERFECT project for a guy like Christos Gage.
A concept that Chuck Austen couldn't fuck up, a story that makes actual sense and it'll be just plain fun.
I think it'll outsell Frontline and Incredible Hulk itself actually.

The Hulk vs the X-Men will probably be the highest selling tie-in (although I bet Incredible Hulk is the best).

How many ways did New X-Men kick ass this week? The death toll has slowed down (and even reversed!) and Magik, whichever version she turns out to be, is amazing. Young still is in my top ten least favorite artists but I've gotta admit Limbo was made for his style. Now, if only we can get some assurance the One True Magik will be featured here or some other X-Title for ever and ever from this point one I'll be a happy camper indeed!

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm worred about this crossover. The multiple-writer projects always seem to end badly, and this will force me to drop X-Factor for a few months. I probably will get the eventual HC, though.

Wizard : Beast appears to be the focus character of “Endangered Species.” Will there be a character that “Messiah” focuses on more than any other in the four respective X-books?
LOWE: The main character in the whole thing, the character that takes the most prominence, would be Cyclops. He steps up and becomes a leader, like we all knew he had in him, but he might not have shown all that much lately. He takes a very large role in this, but there are a bunch of others. This spans all the X-Men characters. X-23 has a big role in it. Wolverine, of course. Angel has one of his bigger roles in recent memory in this. Jamie Madrox and Layla Miller play very significant roles. I could probably give you a list, but Cyclops, Professor X, Mystique and Mr. Sinister are really huge—they’re on the first cover.

As Day Two of the Heroes Convention wrapped up in Charlotte, several Marvel Comics writers sat down and discussed upcoming stories. On the panel were Matt Fraction, Peter David, Christos Gage, Jeff Parker and Daniel Way.
It was David who provided some insight into one of the bigger announcements so far, the “Messiah Complex” storyline, set to run throughout the X-books this fall. “'Messiah Complex' deals with mutants being an endangered species,” said David, “and what happens when Cerebra detects the birth of a child with the X-gene.” He went on to say that both the Marauders and Purifiers also find out about the child, who then disappears, prompting a race to see who can find the baby first. “We had a mutant summit a couple of month ago and beat out the story. It's twelve parts over four books for three months.”
David added that as a result of the events in “Messiah Complex,” there will be a shake-up in the status quo for several of the teams, with his own X-Factor team gaining a member and possibly losing one as well.
Well damn. I might as well make it official i'm calling it, the mutant child will be Wanda Maximoff and Clint Barton's. I said this earlier in another thread but i want it saved here for posterity's sake if it somehow comes to pass.

I have X-Men on my mind. I am not sure if its because I'm on the outskirts of Hong Kong at the end of a business trip, because I spent the day riding around mainland China on trains without a good book to read, because I've read all 206 pages of this thread, or because I'm an X-Men addict and have been for the last 11 years, or all of the aforementioned, but no matter, I have X-Men on my mind.
In no particular order here is what x-topics are racing through my brain:
-Warpath and his flight? Does he still have it? Why haven't we seen it? I want an explanation! My hope is that he does still have it, but like how Psylocke circa X-men 1 - 10 would say she could take out a villian from far away with her telepathy but prefers to physically fight them because its more satisfying, I hope that Warpath just prefers using his super agility, reflexes, and speed over his flight. I like the idea of a mutant with excessive powers that they don't even always like using and having that contrasted with mutants who get shitty powers like Beak. Warpath essentially has a set of "perfect powers" similar to M but more physical than psychic and he just prefers some over others. I think that's cool. Anyway, moving on...
--Cannonball. I'm obsessed. I don't know why. I love that on the daily, he's an immortal mutant and when he uses his powers he's completely invulnerable. If he's not paying attention you still can't kill him and if he is, you can't even touch him. That and he's just a badass. If Jean evolved into the phoenix force Cannonball evolved into whatever the NovaCorps sucked their power from. Plus he took down Gladiator. I wanna see him sucker punch Sentry next.
--Iceman. Give me more. I hope he's involved in Messiah Complex. I'd like to see him step up and let everyone know he's the next big thing. I just need more Iceman that's all I know. I wanna see a buddy book with him and Cannonball.
--I have this bloodlust rage for the death and destruction of all future/alternate timeline mutants, in particular, Rachel Grey, Cable, Bishop, and Dark Beast and Holocaust. The only character that I have ever been ok with that falls into this category is X-Man and that was only after he was Counter-Xised.
--Can we please have more Angel but not in a sucky way. I want to see him kill Gambit. First the man is responsible for making him loose his wings. Then he goes traitor on his teammates and joins Apocalypse to take up the role of Death, the role that Angel was forced into thanks to Gambit in the first place. I really wanna see him do something really nasty to Gambit. If Gambit drank Apocalypse blood to turn into Death I wonder what would happen if he drank Angel's healing blood. I hope something gross.
--Can we all just realize Emma has been a good guy for a long time, she's just a bitch. How come no one stepped up and said "A villian is training our current youth" in the Generation X days. I mean, she'd come over and have tea with Xaiver. I remember this very clearly. No one said a word. She's just a mean person, but not a traitor. That angle is boring. Just keep her mean and nasty, but she gets more flack than Rogue and Rogue wasn't a sweety when she first met the X-men. Hell now she's Lorna Dane bat-shit nuts. Emma shows some boobs and everyone goes up and arms....(i'm not sure if i'm talking about the characters or us or both)
--Phoenix needs to return burn out everything that doesn't work (namely her alternate timeline children) and then go hang out with Iceman, Cannonball, Storm, Angel (and maybe Northstar and Colossus) as the Mighty/Flying/Cunty X-men/(gold team was cooler than the blue team any day of the week).

I want Jean back too but the baggage is too much. I say she wasn't disintegrated at the end of 137(?) but that machine popped her into the future and that coccoon she was later found in was the Phoenix Force creating the perfect host. You don't invalidate any of the stories. 'Course, in my whole storyline, all the future mutants turn out to be from the present with false memories so they can act as sleeper agents for the Phoenix Force and in the end Bishop turns out to be an LA cop with a wife and kids missing him, Cable is Corsair's uncle, and Rachel the product of an affair between Corsair and Jean's sister...

Ok, that's fine too, but I still want her to eat them. They are among my least favorite characters along with Gambit who needs to suck on Angel's anti-apocalypse cajun killing blood.
What if Jean is just some cosmically crazy nutcase who has no handle on death due to a first-handle mental experience of it as a youth when she watches her friend die. All the weird inconsistencies are her own internal inconsistencies within her memory that due to the nature of her powers manifiest themselves in real life. I dunno, I always saw her like that, even before the movie. Now that its film cannon it could be a useful save. I'm sure you could work out all sorts of details this way and get her back. She's got cool visuals and they need her alive to explore her friendship with Iceman, a relationship that has amazing potential and was only touched on once and was then ruined by the appearance of the x-babies.

The best medicine for Gambit is just being ignored. He's one of my top three loathed X-Men and has been since his character led to so much shit going wrong for Rogue. Maybe they should do a Gambit mini that's a play off the death of Rasputin? Each issue could have Gambit killed in another spectacular way until there's no doubt he'd never coming back again...

i am not concerned how its done, as long as its done. i'm still rooting for an angel/gambit no holds barred rip your fucken throat out fight. angel is so much cooler to the point that apocalypse gave him razor wings and he gave gambit super human farts. i mean, if your going to be death blue, you should at least hope your master gives you razor wings and not super-flatulence.
further my top favorite x-men as of right this second: iceman, cannonball, phoenix, storm, and angel.
(but while characters like iceman and phoenix are usually always in my top 5, i like my favorite x-men in groups of 5, so there are days when it might be phoenix iceman rogue mystique nightcrawler - its kinda connect the dots, kevin bacon thing but with x-men instead).
my least favorite characters include rachel grey, cable, bishop, gambit, and with number 5 varying depending on my mood. it was 5 minutes ago, x-23 but i changed my mind and i like her now and its currently rockslide. I hope belasco crushes him into tiny pebbles and exlir tries to heal him but the best he can do is get the pieces smooth enough to play a decent game of marbles and gives up, because hellion invites him over to play Wii instead.

It doesn't break any molds whatsoever (and like I said earlier, is quite formulaic), but it's so damn fun and really is nice-spirited for a book with such a dark premise. Mackie hit a home run on almost every single issue.

For me, it was the X-Tinction Agenda when I started to like him (I'm not sure if I even knew who he was before that; it hadn't been long since I'd started reading comics).
I really liked the idea that he was Cyclops' younger brother, and he was always living in the shadow of this great superhero leader that everyone (except Scott himself) believed could do no wrong- would never fail.
I also really dug the idea that he and Scott were immune to each others' powers (a trait I think Gabriel Summers should share-that would be cool). That meant that every time they fought, it would have to be hand-to-hand. I remember when Scott was trying to 'pound some sense' into Alex's brainwashed head, there's a panel with the two of them fighting on the ground, and while they're grappling on the ground, they're both throwing off these huge amounts of energy that are flying around and blowing all kinds of shit up.
I also like that while Wolverine has always had an adversarial relationship with Scott, he seems to actually like Havok, even to the point where he sometimes treats him like a little brother.
Plus, I was reading X-Factor when Peter David took over and Havok was the new leader, and I grew to like him even more than most of the Giant-Size era team.

I donno, it'd really been brewing since the Forge mysticism element came into the book with the Lifedeath I & II books. You had the Adversary, Roma's gift of not existing to the world, and the Siege Perilous was the next step of that.
It gave Claremont the perfect ending to most of the stories that'd been brewing since Madelyne Pryor came into the picture, and created dozens more like the ones you listed. Especially naked Rogue falling out of the ceiling.

This is gonna sound crazy, but one of my favorites was somewhere in the '90's, probably around AoA/Onslaught/Bastion. AoA was fantastic, and Joe MAD drew the best Rogue, Bobby and Gambit.
My personal favorite may be late in Morisson's run with Austen on Uncanny. You had Grant doing awesome stuff and Austen finally got a permanent artist in Larocca and he was writing his best stuff. "She Lies with Angels" was terrific and that Wolvie/Xavier story in Genosha perfectly set up Astonishing. It was just like, a year of awesome leading into Cassaday and Whedon, which continues to impress.

I would duck and cover if I were you, someone may throw something at you. :o)
For me, the best era was AOA and Morrison's stuff. Either, I loved them both.
As per Austen, I thought the idea of the groups of mutants with similar powers coming together was great, the execution sucked though. Should never have started with it with the wolverine-esque mutants. Should have started with the telepaths since they have been doing it for years anyway. Psychics were always very pro-psychic anyway and I think he could have extended that very naturally and came up with a way to throw them off their high horse and develop a group of mutants with a different power that takes center stage as the power to have if you are a mutant. But i don't think it'd have been being a wolf or having wings. I'd have made it an Iceman centered story. He's the antithesis of a telekinetic anyway...They move things (and on a molecular level at times). He stops (re: freezes) things (on a molecular level) sometimes. It'd have been more fun and shown him as the sorta anti-phoenix too; if she burns away what doesn't work, maybe he keeps around what does.
Oh well. At least Jay Guthrie is dead. I hated him, didn't fit with the Guthrie power set that was developing. (cannonball exudes an energy field from his skin, husk has a sub-dermal skin reaction that changes her structural make-up, that's how i see it in my head at least).

Endangered Species was pretty neat, actually.
Very unconventional for an X-Book, in that it was all exposition, but it's a really good way to get the uninformed get caught up in the happenings of the X-titles.
I found the splash page of future Wolverine standing over everyone's graves to be particularly resonant, as well as the scene with Bishop and Scott and Logan's little bit at the end.
One of the issue's biggest strengths was Eaton's ability to capture everyone's facial nuances. If it wasn't for him. this book would have been completely dull.
So I can understand why some people might have found it boring and uneventful, especially for the $3.99 price tag. I, however, really enjoyed it - a great setup for the next year, or so.

That pretty much sums up my feelings. It's very clear to me that Mike Carey actually loves these characters as much as any of the fans do (and I think that can be said about all of the X-writers right now), the result of which is the great character scenes this is made up of; in particular Sam/Bobby/Bishop's conversation, the Professor's confrontation with Sebastian Shaw (!!), and Scott/Logan conversation (which was fantastic).

Just read the Endangered Species one-shot and while i can understand complaints about it being on the dull side i still enjoyed it.
I don't know if it needed to be a one-shot lead off especially when most of it is simply dealing with the realization that these characters are the last of their kind. We and "they" all knew this already. But still Scot Eaton shines here and the Sebastian Shaw tease is enough for me. Come on Shaw, take back the Hellfire Club from that brazilian tranny already and start kicking some ass!

Oh, and Ultimate X-Men was yet again my least favorite of all purchases the week it comes out. I think I'd have to buy a Liefeld book the same week as the next issue to break this streak now.

X-Men #200 was easily my favorite issue of Carey's run yet, definitely felt more like an X-Men comics than any of his previous issues. Not that any of his issues have been "bad" just that they haven't really felt all that "X-Menny". This one did.

X-Men 200: Okay so Mystique is a traitor? Saw that coming but not like this. I'd kinda hoped it would make sense. See, these Marauders appear to have been formed in response to the Decimation and Raven joined the team before that. And seriously, who doesn't think that what Mystique did at the end of the issue won't wind up helping the good guys somehow in the end?
Oh, and the back up was a wee bit more interesting than the one shot and it's cool how in so few pages a better start was made to this story than we've seen in most new ongoings beginnings.

She's a Skrull. One of the Skrulls was around for the House of M, realized she was a proxy, and then impersonated her and is using her so as to use X-Factor to do certain things in the mutant community...

Um... if you go back and re-read it, he's focusing on using Cerebra. He even says he has to completely focus, and "shut everything else out". At the same time, Beast is working the New X-Men out, and the Hulk shows up. Very shortly thereafter (the majority of this issue happens in a matter of minutes, if not seconds), the Professor greets Hulk at the door.
As far as Hank letting the Hulk in? WTF? Are you crazy? Everyone's seen what the Hulk did to Black Bolt, and they know he's planning on smashing. All Hank knows is the Hulk is right in front of him, pissed off and demanding to come in, and meanwhile he's got a group of kids he's trying to evacuate. He had to buy them time, and he's got a group of X-Men (fledgling X-Men, yes, but these kids have been through a huge amount of shit in a small amount of time) with him to do just that.

Hi-Fi sounds like he really enjoyed your latest issue. “‘X-Men' #200 really makes Mystique more intriguing than ever. I can see her planning this all along because she hates the X-Men, but how could she do that to Rogue? Does that mean that all she said to her daughter about how much she cares for her was a big lie? I mean, she even saved her life in the Annual when there was no one looking. I'd also like to know if we're going to see a Rogue/Mystique confrontation before the crossover ends.”
Hi-Fi, that's the most crucial question to come out of #200, I think – and I don't want to say anything either way in terms of answering it. I agree, it's a conundrum. Even within #200 itself, Mystique is tearing strips off Emma for not moving quickly enough or decisively enough to deal with Rogue's condition.
You can count on that confrontation.

There were some things about part one I didn't like plot or art wise but they weren't present this time. I preferred the space epic to be sure but the ground based team is turning out to be okay. I didn't like what Skids was party to or the fact asshole Charlie is back (and trying out the new 'tude on the undeserving Val) but as the whole issue is a major step up from last issue the complaints don't hurt my enjoyment of the book. 4 out of 5 x's!

Just finished reading Uncanny X-Men # 488 and it's another strong issue but i'm disappointed at Darwin's TOTAL disappearance, has he even been mentioned in the last 2 issues? Plus uh is ANYONE going to tell the story of Cyclops being told his father is dead and his brother is essentially "Lost" in space? Things like that really bug me, and i can't see Joss Whedon or Mike Carey handling it so it'll probably fall through the cracks until the Big Shi'ar mini in the fall. That's too long and makes the events seem trivial when no one seems to care.
Masque as usual is a major ass-clown and i also loved Hepzibah's interaction with the team. She could be a fun addition to the team. The Charlie X and Nightcrawler mission to find Magneto is very very interesting and to be honest it overpowers the main plot. Surprised at the Morlock reveal about the future clairvoient, i was expecting the Books Of Destiny myself. Salvadors stuff looks good but a few of his faces look off in places, especially Val Cooper's regression from Super-Model/Govt Agent to homely looking chick.
Still good stuff all around, the back-up meanwhile makes perfect sense. The High Evolutionary HAD to be involved in this concept in some way so i'm happy they're doing it but Mark Bagley's stuff here was phoned in.
Overall though, solid stuff all around 7/10

In Shi'Ar space?
But despite me being okay with the Corsair development, i'm also just as disappointed at the lack of follow-up.

I'm not a good indicator of pace in singles. I'm so used to reading full arcs in trade and all pacing problems all but disappear in that format.
Everything seems to move slowly in singles. It's not like when i was a kid.

Man, I can't wait for the next issue of X-Men!!! I think since the new creative teams took over, the team books in the X-Men universe are as good as they've been in a long time, maybe ever, if you look at all of them as a whole.
Brubaker's Uncanny does a great job of giving the characters their old voices back, as well as furthering their stories along with new chapters to long running stories (so far we've had the Shi'ar, the Starjammers, the Morlocks, and soon: Magneto!). If only I could figure out where Darwin has been the last two issues...
Carey's X-Men is, in a word, fantastic. I love the unpredictability that book has going right now, and I loooooove the way Carey sees these characters and their universe, and although he is adding new material to the mythos, does a great job of embracing what has come before and building on it.
Kyle and Yost have been kicking ass since Decimation, IMO. New X-Men is a great team book. 'Nuff said!
Peter David + X-Factor = I'm a happy panda.
Astonishing is kind of outside the group right now, and probably will remain that way, which is fine. Whedon and Cassaday kick so much ass on that book... I never want either one to leave! :D

I just wish Astonishing didn't hold its characters hostage with it being so damn slow and seeming to all take place within a few day period.

I read X-Men 200 and... is it me or did you not get the impression Cable had "died" when reading it. Only afterwards when I read Cable & Deadpool I realized actually what had happened.
Yeah, I thought the big death was supposed to be Rogue when I read it. I just thought Cable got caught in an explosion. Which would be enough for me to think someone else had died but something about Cable I guess just made me think he was probably just rather hurt, especially since, unlike most comic deaths of late there was no "Hey look, it's the body! Hey look someone is sadly cradling it in their arms! BE SAD!" moment to clue me in.

Well, to be fair, it would be much closer to on time had John Cassaday not taken the time to draw the Fallen Son: Iron Man issue. I know what you mean, though. It would be nice to have it on time every month.

X-Force CounterX issues. Warren Ellis decided to take Warpath's rampage to the skies as well. I like him with the additional power. It gives him that perfect power set short of telepathy. I think its a fun constrast when you have mutants like nightcrawler. I think it would be great if he had it but just preferred not to use it; he finds it boring, prefers running around at high speeds and getting sweaty.

Interesting. For some reason, I actually dropped X-Force early into the CounterX stuff, so I wasn't aware of this flying ability. It seems a bit out of place, but it could work, I suppose.

X-related books coming out this week:
DEADPOOL GLI SUMMER FUN SPECTACULAR $3.99
EXILES #96 $2.99
NEW EXCALIBUR #21 $2.99
ULTIMATE X-MEN #84 $2.99

I  X-Factor. Peter David is doing some fantastic work on the title. It might be my favorite X-title, but I'm not sure. X-Men and Uncanny are both excellent right now, too.
Wolverine, on the other hand.... bleck.

I'm strongly considering putting that on my next DCBS order. But since I have almost all of the singles, I'm thinking of getting the Fantastic Four Omnibus instead...

Cant see it happening, especially since Charest typically is lucky to put out 2 issues a year. The guy is horribly slow and just doesnt seem interested in doing super hero comics. I still think it's gonna be Jeph Loeb writing with Ed McGuennis on art.

The strange thing is Charest was able to do a near monthly back when he was doing Wildcats, and his art suffered very little. After Wildcats though, he changed and became UBER slow.

I don't know... The book only sells because of Whedon, and I can't think of any "superstar" writers available at marvel right now who could maintain those numbers.
Marvel could always surprise me, but I dunno.

And I'm talking in terms of star power, not well written stories or anything.

And to those who think money would keep it afloat: At Marvel lately, there has been a slight trend towards artistic integrity trumping sheer mercantile concerns. Civil War and Ultimates still would have sold as well without HItch and McNiven doing every issue but they chose to go the delay route. Plus returning the Astonishing cast into the pool of available characters would mean Carey wouldn't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel the next time he wants an X-Men line up.
