eh, Cable is alright. I only made it two issues into Soldier X, though.
There were some good moments in his solo book years ago, especially the Casey/Ladronn stuff.
I just don't know if he needs to stick around in Cable&Deadpool. Some of the best issues of that series have been sans Cable. Just relegate him to X-Men for awhile.

A) How many of the 198 remaining mutants (and is this before or after the mutants murdered in New X-Men) were shown to be living on the game preserve Xavier's was turned into?

2) Jamie Madrox was stated to be a throwback to the days of unsuccessful mutations (unsuccessful because they happened at birth rather than puberty and were usually killed) and I was wondering who else is in that category. Beast and Nightcrawler to be certain but how many otehrs are there? I get from X-Factor that these are very much also mutants but just a slightly different class. Did 'no more mutants' miss this sub-class and we could conceivably have more than 198 in actuality?

X-Factor consistently has a phenomenal story. Jamie Madrox is quickly becoming one of my favorite protagonist. If this book had a big name artist, it could be the top selling X-book. (I'm talking Finch, Cassaday, McNiven) To me, the art on this book has been average at best, yet it is still one of my favorites. That, to me, says a lot about Peter David's ability.

X-Factor's good but I wish we'd get more time with the supporting cast for a long time it seems more like Madrox and pals.

As for C&D hot damn the little book that people thought could'nt gets itself a crossover that might increase sales past the loyal 65 readers!

i want to like X-Factor more than I do but I really don't like almost the entire cast, or at least PAD's takes on them. I do like Ramondi's art better than any of the others but I think the approach PAD is taking here would work better with a solo project. Not that I'd like a solo ongoing for Jamie but most of the cast feel like afterthoughts rather than co-stars. is there another X character that would benefit from the brains and inventiveness of PAD? I'd say Rogue but I am still feeling the aftereffects of too much gambit and Rogue over too many years.

Anyone else disappointed in X-Factor this week? I'm beginning to realize that the only thing seperating this book from the other D list collection of heroes in New Excalibur is the quality of the writer. I just don't think even PAD is going to keep me reading much longer if the stories are all about people I don't care about doing things that really don't matter. At least it was a damn sight better than the train wreck Ultimate X-Men 82 was. The art and story did the impossible and became worse than preceeding issues. I think the only book that looked worse this week was Countdown 50 and the only one written worse was that godawful shit between the covers of All Star Batman And Robin 5. When did Frank Miller morph into 80's Howard Chaykin anyway? I wish I still had his DD run in my collection to wipe the vile taste of ASBAR from my brain. At least Uncanny was kick ass. Loved the ending beyond belief and the re-mutantification cancels out at least one of New X-Men's murders so we stay at 198.

Did I ramble? Oops...

The Jack Rabbitt
05-17-2007, 10:42 AM
Yeah, okay, I have a mad love for the obscure horrible X-villains. I am loving that so many are popping up in X-Factor.

Uncanny this week was pretty decent. The action battle scene could've probably been done better and I'm still not a huge fan of Tan's work. The ending was what really sold me. Even though we'd basically already predicted the outcome, it was great to see it on paper. The death in the issue didn't bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. After it happened, I said to myself, "Huh. I'm okay with this. There's some good story potential in the offing."

Any guesses as to who the new Creative Team will be on Wolverine? Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi's run ends in July so unless these upcoming Solicits are simply a fill-in we'll know by Tuesday.

Crossing my fingers for a Marc Guggenheim reunion. His Civil War arc was an absolute blast and even though i think Humberto Ramos isn't suited to such an book if that's what it'll take for Marc to come back i'll be all for it.

Sigh. I'm so far gone when it comes to Wolverine that I can't even imagine attempting to muster the energy it would require to become excited for a creative team on Wolverine. However, from what I hear, it sounds like anything would be better than Loeb's run.

I read Wolverine #50-52 yesterday and it has it's up's and downs. Simone Bianchi's stuff looks great and everything that has nothing to do with the horrible flashbacks is actually quite good. Wolverine vs Sabretooth,Black Panther,Storm etc etc.

But these stupid horrifically bad flashbacks with the Lupines and the pre-historic shit is as bad an idea as i've seen in comics this decade. I literally have no clue what the fuck Loeb's thinking. I can only hope that it'll be ignored by everyone else forever.

The only problem I ever have with X-Factor is the art. It's just not consistent. What is consistent is the great storytelling. This, for me, is the best X book. I'm still calling for a big name artist- won't happen, but I think Gaydos would be appropriate here.

Ramiondi is still the X-Factor artist, Pham is just doing a fill-in. Ramiondi isnt all that fast, so expect him to be on for 4 or so issues in a row, and then a couple of fill-in's.

Carey is fine on X-Men, but I would like to see a new artist. Bachalo's art is too confusing, there were a lot of panels in the latest X-Men, where honestly, I couldnt tell what was happening.

Raimiondi wasnt the artist for the first year though, so he actually hasnt been that so far. And three issues off is a bit much, but it wouldnt be so bad if Marvel had chosen a fill-in artist whose style was actually attractive to look at. Pham's artwork looks half done at times.

That's what I'm saying. If you do three issues, then there's fill-ins for the next six, then you do two more, etc, you are NOT the book's 'regular penciller'.

It's amazing to me how few guys there are out there than can draw 11 or 12 issues a year. That's one of the reasons I love guys like Mark Bagley and John Romita JR. Not only are they excellent artists and amazing storytellers (Both of them), but you don't have to wait forever for their books to come out (and their books are always worth the very short wait. Always).

I don't normally read Exiles, but I have to say that the lineup is very intriguing. I love the fact that they're using Spider-Man 2099 (and Longshot!).

Should I be reading it? Or is written in that Claremont style that we all are so damn familiar with?

It's actually pretty damn good. He brought his pet character with him, but he seems to be surprisingly comfortable with the rest of the cast, and is crafting fun stories with underlying hints at something bigger with the multiverse.

As long as Claremont is writing the book, I'm not buying. I tried the first issue, and it reminded me of everything I dont like in a Claremont written comic, dialogue was weak, pointless fight scene and just generally too "old fashioned" of a writing style for my tastes. I think Astonishing should end with Whedon leaving the book. Maybe start a volume two if Whedon wants to play in the X-Arena again or if someone of equal status wants an X book. I just can't think of anyone out there I would give the book too. Vaughn maybe but he doesn't to play at Marvel for the time being. Keeping the book going just to keep it going is pointless. If this company delays Civil War because of an incredibly slow artist and won't renew Young Avengers because of its creative team, it'd make sense to end Astonishing with twenty-four.

And Exiles? If you don't like Claremont, don't go anywhere near it. I like the guy's classic style (and oh boy, is this typical Claremont) and even I can barely tolerate this book and New Excalibur.

I went on the reading spree of reading sprees this weekend.

I'm now up to date with Uncanny,X-Men and X-Factor after having not read any of them for close to a years worth of issues.

The verdict?

Uncanny - Solid but padded. The X-Men went most of the series not doing all that much all considered but the last issue really went out with a bang imo and i ended up enjoying it quite a bit. 7.5/10

X-Men - I love the roster and Lady Mastermind could be a X staple character for years after this. But the Children Of The Vault are meh. It's never a good idea to introduce tons of different villains all at once especially when it's thematically similar to the Neo and the Weapon X rejects in Morrisons X-Men run. Plus the stupid flying ship...:nonono2: Still i like how they're handling Sabretooth and i've enjoyed the 2 subsequent 3 part stories with the evil Rogueish villain and the Mummandrai. Just don't kill Rogue or i'll hurt someone 7/10

X-Factor - Orgasmic Bliss. Jamie Madrox & Layla Miller may be my 2 favorite characters right now and i love everything about the book. I'm glad they wrapped up the SI plotline and moved on. The art meanwhile i feel has been really strong despite they're being about 6 of them through 19 issues.

Nah. It's a strong way to go out (Being killed by your own son) and with his replacements in Havok/Polaris/Rachel temporary or not it still outweighs the negative of him being dead. He showed up once every 2 years for 10 pages anyway so no big deal. Especially if Skunky turns out to be a solid addition to the X-team.

I'm just really picky on deaths of supporting characters. I just can't help but feel like killing 30+ year-old characters should be done more sparingly then it has been recently. Also, I respect writers who build up a character before their death. Warpath I would have found less painful, since Bru was the one to make him cool again. Still, I'm excited for the potential story.

Don't try to fit Astonishing X-Men in the timeline it'll just make your head explode. But reading the arcs they all take place in short amounts of time relatively speaking. I guess we can't say where until the arc is over and someone's dead.

I don't think that it was intentional for WWH and AXM to have similarites, just a strange coincidence.

I'd imagine that we have to see Cyke's reaction at some point. Provided that he makes it back from Breakworld, that is.

You would think so, but it seems like any time the last few years that there is a major death in the X-universe, it's pretty much glossed over. We never see any conversations about anything. For instance, the only place we saw anything about people's feelings about Scott making out with one of the X-Men's worst enemies on his wife's grave just after she died, and then shacking up with her in his and Jean's bedroom, was in an issue of X-Men Unlimited in which Havok and Marvel Girl both basically admitted that Scott is a complete and utter douchebag now.

I have a feeling that we've seen all the reactions on Earth we're GOING to see concerning the murder of.....well....you know who. (Can we stop marking spoilers for this? Doesn't everyone know by now?)

Same here. The main thing I've been missing from the X-books for awhile now is that sense that they're a part of this community. The different teams may be doing completely different things, but every now and then they used to have an issue, or at least part of an issue, where everyone kind of deals with all the shit they've been going through. I always loved those issues, when the X-Men were hanging around the mansion, trying to pretend everything's ok, meanwhile Scott won't leave the Danger Room, Wolverine is out fighting, or drinking, or cutting stuff up (or probably all three), Storm has a heart to heart with Kitty, Bobby and Hank blow off some steam, etc etc.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like when these books just jump from six part story to six part story, they end up bypassing a lot of the things that were always great about the X-Men in the first place.

Agreed. I love the standalone, fallout issues. Both Claremont and Lobdell used to do that quite well and it is something that has been lacking. However, those issues almost always came after very large every-book-encompassing megacrossovers. Perhaps we'll have some good fallout issues after the Endangered Species storyline.

May I just say I really, really hated X-Men 199? So Rogue is now the world's worst sufferer of multiple personality disorder, murderous, and still dying of that plague? She, Cannonball, and Iceman were the only members of this team I liked and with Bobby continuing the X-Men Family's longest string of bad girlfriend choices that's down to Sam now. If I had my way Lady Mastermind and Lady Sentinel would both be gone. Sabretooth now has no reason to be on the team and hasn't since the Children were believed destroyed. If he returns next issue it will be out of character and coming up with a new reason why he needs to join and the team needs to accept him would just be too much. And Cable? Ugh. On a side-note, why is Fabian still with Marvel? Cable/Deadpool is his second book he's had screwed with in the last year because TPTB have decided some other book is more important.
My suggestions for the book beyond a writer with a better idea for it and an artist whose work is easier to follow? I don't know. I'm not a comic professional. I just know what I like and X-Men hasn't been it since Mike Carey took it on. Maybe there are too many X-Books? Cancel Adjectiveless and Astonishing as well as New Excalibur. Let's make do with Uncanny, New X-Men, Exiles, and of course the Wolverine books (economics demands that) until there's actual creative and economic demand. Maybe there wouldn't be X-Books I hate if there were actual reasons for them to exist beyond the fact they have existed. And maybe cancel X-Factor, release the extraneous characters back into the wild, and let PAD have his Madrox solo book since that's mostly what he's been doing anyways.

And if Adjectiveless continues, here's my perfect line up: Archangel, Aurora, Cannonball, Diamond Lil, Iceman, Madison Jeffries, Northstar, and Wolfsbane. I don't think I'll ever see this team but Aurora and Northstar would be an amazing addition to this team. Alpha Flight writers, even John Byrne, failed to see the devastating potential of two super speedsters on one team. Take any big battle any X-Team has been in over the years and imagine adding the twins. Plus, this is the new millenium and maybe we can get a scene finally of Aurora and Northstar hitting a bar together or fighting over the same guy. Iceman would be perfect...

Nothing new is being said with her so cut her loose. I'd rather have her in limbo than reduced to filler. Plus, I will scream if I see her drawn one more time with a wolf's head photo shopped in on a crude female form!

and what's wrong with Lil and Madison? If we can ignore that awful series that allegedly killed Maggot, they were wonderful in the last true Alpha Flight series. Stand up guy married to a woman more prone to doing the wrong thing? Sounds like Emma and Scott but it was done by them first.

I'd say the odds of you actually having read Black Panther as being no better than 50/50.

Unless everyone who actually was reading Priests BP is coincidentally also a comic book message poster.

I read the first trade and it was fine. Mark Texiera always kicks ass but i'm not dying to track the rest of it down.

I just don't think he's a very intriguing character to support an long-term ongoing comic.

See also Aquaman.

Yawn. Whatever, dude. You should know me well enough by now to know that I'm not talking out of my ass. I read the whole damn run while it was published.

Looking good but i'll send Marvel $ 1.32 if they can tell someone to stop drawing Iceman like a 14 year old twat.

just read funeral for a freak and the dd/dp annual.

funeral was decent, definitely not the best dp story ever. in fact a lot of it was weak. But it led us to Gail's historic run.
3 x's

the annual. Is it sad that i thought the best part was weasel and foggy comparing super hero best buds? And Mr. Hammer trying to trade...?

Man, I really don't like Ramos on X-Men.

Meh, I'm a kinda pissed two people are drawing it. Multiple artists\inkers have been a curse for the x line in the last two decades.

That's ok, I really, really do. I'll take him on this book over Bachalo any day. And I say that as a pretty big Bachalo fan.

Why are you saying it's okay? 'Cause you're making for his dislike with your like?

Because I'm cool with differing opinions. It's ok that he doesn't like Ramos' X-Men, that's cool. I, on the other hand, love his X-Men.

Exactly. I'll still buy the X-Men issues that Ramos does, because I really like Mike Carey's writing and I really like the characters.

I really like Bachalo, but I think this book needs a regular artist that doesn't have the anime/manga influence.

I'm sure there are people that feel pretty much the exact opposite, and that's cool, too.

Layla Miller

Will her powers/motivations ever be explained?

Should they?

Also Rictor. Gay for Pietro or just good pals?

Layla needs to remain a mystery. That's what makes her so fun. When she throws that shit like marrying Jamie- priceless. Rictor is a bitch- nuff said.

Concerning Layla, I think less is more, at least for the time being. Somewhere down the road, I'm sure we'll get a lot more backstory and explanations for how her powers work, etc.

Rictor's not gay, but I wouldn't say his tastes were exactly "normal". Consider he used to hook up with Wolfsbane on the regular, and you'll see what I mean.
