Wow, we're almost at 100 issues of Exiles? :o
It's a very impressive milestone to be sure. Same goes for Cable & Deadpool's upcoming 50th issue.
I can only pray X-Factor reaches the 100th issue once again some day.

1977-2007?
Will Jeph Loeb do it or not? If so will it even matter? Victor will be back by the end of the decade at the latest anyway.
Right? :scared:
Sigh Marc Guggenheim can't return fast enough.

I dunno, I don't think it would be such a bad thing if they got rid of Sabretooth for a while, considering he has never been as cool as he was in Mutant Massacre (the Claremont/Alan Davis issue of Uncanny, to be exact).
I just think the current story sucks. The art is freaking awesome, but Loeb? Meh.

The current Wolverine story arc has been pretty disappointing. I've never been a big Sabertooth fan, but I think he deserves to go out in a bigger storyline than this (not that I think any death would be permanent, but still.)
First Class debuting at 79 doesn't bode well for it continuing for very long.
I was actually re-reading some of X-Men: Hidden Years earlier, and it was surprisingly enjoyable. It causes all sorts of odd continuity things (Storm appearing prior to Giant-Size, etc.), but it was fun for a quick read.

As far as I know, that's just a rumor. I doubt Daken will be "Sabretooth", but I can see him taking Sabretooth's spot as the primary Wolverine villain, at least for a little while...

Just finished WWH:X-Men and New X-Men, and both were kickass!
I swear, every time I read a comic written by Cris Gage I become more and more of a fan. Didn't get to pick up his Quasar mini today, but it's in my pull box (come on payday!).
Andrea Divito, too, is just better and better. His work on Thor: Disassembled was great, and his work on Annihilation was even better (!!), but I think this is some of the best work I've seen him do to date. You can practically feel the impact from the blows the Hulk's raining down on everyone (sucks to be Colossus and Wolverine!). Also, loved that last splash, as well as Nightcrawler's line: "Not yet, mein herr... it's a big family."
I have to admit, as far as Skottie Young on New X-Men, that I was really really wrong. I thought it would be a big drop from the work Paco Medina was doing, but I think it might actually fit this book (at least this story) even better!
I liked the development with Illyana/Darkchilde, as well as Belasco continuing to be a twisted, evil, sadistic fucker, and Anole (!!!) being a badass, but my favorite part was "GET THE $#$% AWAY FROM MY FRIENDS!"
Endangered Species was really good, too. Chris Yost is another guy that I seem to like more and more. I think I liked Kavita Rao better here than I ever did in Astonishing (maybe. I have to re-read AXM when it's all done).
I was broke as hell today, and was only able to pick a few books out of my pull list: World War Hulk, WWH:X-Men, Avengers:The Initiative, New X-Men, and Ultimate Spider-Man. Feeling pretty good about my choices :D

cable/deadpool-old school 90's pointless action and humor 4.5 x's! the

x-men 201-so much possible shit going down. mike carey seems to be
attempting to tie together all the loose threads from the past decade...and
maybe, just maybe the return of destiny...i think i am going to like the
iceman/cannonball teamup even if they are doomed to die...4x's
endangered species-finally they show what happened with neverland...in a
continuity book! rabbitt you must be happy, more beast after 5 parts this
story is currently at 4.79 x's
all star batman and robin-why do i buy this f'ing comic? it is so bad and

Rahne and Ric was cool, as was the very obvious sub plot with M anyone else see a multiple birth in her future? but X-Factor is one of the best written, boring comics going. Not even in the top 5 for me in a week that incuded Fables, Justice Society, and Nexus but still better than Countdown and Excalibur/Exiles.
i think i said this before, but maybe on another board but with M i think that she will definitely have identical twins as it runs in her family and the question will be are they multiple baby killcrop mutants or are they twins. its going to be fantastic. and even if they can merge, it doesn't mean they aren't identical twins, as that's a power that also runs in her family. the question of one of the twins authenticity will be called into question

X-Men # 201
Loved it! The Marauders victory, the taking of Rogue, the way Emma forced Cannonball to escape, the team-up with Iceman,Exodus attacking the Mansion with his team. The mystery involving Blindfold and Elixir, Just a general Holy Fuck! What's next? feeling is permeating this book at the moment and that's a feeling that has been lacking here since Grant Morrison left. Plus the Endangered Species back-up this week kicked seven shades of ass. Shame the solicits spoiled the return of Dark Beast though  The final splash was great but it would have been fucking EPIC without the spoilers.
Wolverine # 55
Taken as a stand-alone issue this one's actually pretty damn good actually. Simone Bianchi is getting better with every issue and his upcoming work with Warren Ellis on Astonishing X-Men should be fucking Killer! Still not feeling Romulus yet though which is worrying since clearly he's HUGE in the future Wolverine plans. I'm still baffled at the whole Lupine throughout history thing (What was the fucking point???)but at least Jeph Loeb clarifys that those were visions sent to Logan from Romulus and ARE NOT supposed to be Logan and Victor fighting through the ages at least not in a literal sense. But the big news of course is the DEATH OF SABRETOOTH :( Ol Wolveroonie slices and dices Victor real good here and uses the Muramasa blade to slice his head off in a truly stunning 2 page Bianchi splash. Victor you will be missed but with his healing factor and his ties with Mr.Sinister and Romulus himself i know he can be resurrected lickety-split so i can't be too upset. Besides it's time to give him a bit of a breather anyway. Bring him back in a couple of years tops and i'll be happy.

He spent a million dollars accrued from Army backwages to set up a telephone hotline to save people (in the mid 80s. Which evil bastards later told him he had to pay tax on after he had already spent it all to make him work for evil.) but he missed the boat on My Space?

Especially if Bachalo is one of the new Spider-Artists like it looks in that preview. I kinda hope it turns out to be Mark Bagley. His X-Men work in Ultimate Spider-Man was amazing.
That said, am I the only one dreading Astonishing post Joss? I don't read Wolverine so I have no idea how bad or good the art will be, but Ellis on the book will be Morrison The Sequel. His work on Excalibur was amazing and his revamp of the secondary titles cool but I don't think I'll enjoy him on a flagship title.

The Cornell Wisdom mini was fantastic. I'd like to see him take over New Excalibur, b/c I really can't see Wisdom shipping over to Astonishing. And I would prefer to see Beast stay on. And of course, Kitty needs to stay. Ellis writes her fantastically.

Yes. I take it back. Kitty and Peter need to stay, Wisdom needs to join, and Pryde and Wisom need to re-hook up! As for Beast, I started reading comics about the same time that Hawkeye quit (Avengers 108?) and there was no new X-Men material. I read the Beast's solo book and then he became an Avenger so in my heart, Hank McCoy will always be an Avenger first, X-Man second. I'd love him in Mighty Avengers. Cho would draw him amazingly and think of the headaches the Hank and Simon team could give Ms Marvel!

I honestly won't miss Larroca or Ramos but in the roundtable Bachalo says he will be back. And aren't there too many popular X-Men to have one team featured semi-monthly? I've been actually thinking there should even be another X-Men series, marrying Avengers and X-Men lines. What would people think of an Initiative title, maybe the team officially for Massachusetts since it's not that far from Westchester, where it's half Avengers characters and half classic X-Men? You'd get the best of both worlds.

well, Naturally Beast would have to be on the team, and maybe Ms. Marvel (because of her Binary ties to Starjammers - hell, throw Hepzibah onto the team, too). And of course, Beast needs Simon.

Another thought: I think we can assume 99% of the X-Men are de facto registered and also meet Initiative standards but what about the New X-Men? I wouldn't mind seeing a group from the Initiative stop by to observe and approve of the training methods. It'd even be cool to see the kids visit Camp Hammond for some testing and training there as well.

Bachalo's own words from Newsarama:
"Spidey was barely on mind when Andy Schmidt, my editor on X-Men, mentioned to me the idea of working on Amazing. He shared with me that Marvel was shuffling their publishing schedule, that they were going to be rotating artists on Amazing, and that we had a little time between X-Men arcs. That, maybe, I'd be a nice fit for an arc."
"I'm really not sure how I fit into all of that. I'm not under the impression that I'll be working on the book beyond the three issues that I've been asked to do, that I'll be continuing to spend time with the X-Men. I've a very large crossover ahead of me on that title. After I wrap Amazing #555 this weekend I'll be going back on X-Men for three issues for the crossover and then I'll back on Amazing to wrap my arc on that book. After that, I'm not 100% sure where I'll land as the X-Men publishing line up is being modified as are the creative teams."
"Really, because I'll be on the book a short time its unrealistic to think that I can I'll have any kind of huge impact on the franchise or direction of the book..."
This doesn't sound like the words of a man who wants to leave the X-Men books. Heck, he seems to go out of his way to say he's not ditching them...
Kefky
07-28-2007, 07:50 PM
Yea, I read that. But there's really no way he could draw two books a month when he can't even draw one properly. Either he's leaving, or he'll be drawing the x-men again once in a blue moon.

Some random questions I have from reading this week's X-books...
1) What the fuck did Dazzler do in Ultimate X-Men 85? Did I miss the explanation? There wasn't even a hint of explaining and no foreshadowing that we'd learn about it later. Does Ultimate Dazzler even have to convert sound into light like the 616 version? Still, it's the best issue of the series by Kirkman since I started reading this title.
B) Does it seem to anyone else that the better Exiles gets (and this is the best post-Winick issue yet) that New Excalibur gets worse? I'm hoping the rumors that Paul Cornell will take over writing this book are true 'cause I like most of the characters. That said, I will drop this book after I see how they get out of this storytelling mess if Claremont will still be writing it.
III) Who else was cheering on Nicole in X-Factor? Didn't see that one coming.
4) What's the point of stating Rictor is bi then just give him a girlfriend? Or friend with benefits might be the better way to describe it.
E) Omega Flight: Thank god it's over. Message to Marvel: I was only buying this issue to see how it tied up. Please do not give me more of this team by these creators.

It was annoying when at one of the more recent panels they hyped Carey up as "The Man who killed Cable" because clearly no one had a clue. I remember hearing the artist for the issue of Cable & Deadpool that expands upon #200 saying when he read 200 even he was like.

Wow. I waited months for this crap? Astonishing 22 is easily the worst issue of the Whedon run and as not its biggest fan to begin with, that's saying a lot. Was it me or did absolutely fucking nothing advance in this issue? Oh sure, Lockheed was outed, Kitty and Peter had more icky sex, and we found out that Danger's name should be Trouble instead but that justifies holding this cast hostage? No wonder the new X-Editor decided to let Carey use these characters in his book finally. There at least we see them do things and their actions have consequence. Who cares if a newly created generic alien world has problems? Yes, the dialog is 87% fantastic but that alone can't carry a book for me. The dialog has to be framed by something that matters and this little vanity project has pretty much used up the tiny little patience I had left. AARGH!
How long until next issue comes out?

It doesn't even look like the next issue will be coming out this year, since it didn't show up in the november solicits....
With this and runaways also vanishing from existence, I don't know what the hell's going with Whedon.

Yeah..... it wasn't pretty.
BUT how was the Peter/Kitty sex icky?

I can't stand Colossus. Never have, never will. The sole reason for his being revived was so that scene from last issue and this one (both of which have made me glad I was already gay before I read them) could happen. I preferred the other Peter with Kitty. Maybe Ellis can revisit that when he takes over. After all, Kitty's now had the chance to see what she missed by not bedding Rasputin before he died. Now she can move on to a character better suited to her.

23 is still on the schedule for next month. It's 24 (the last issue) that hasn't been solicited yet.
I loved 22. Tons happened, the dialogue was great, and there was a shocking ending.
Also, X-Men 202 was also excellent (minus the art) and had a ton of great continuity references. Messiah CompleX is apparently tying together every dangling plotline and featuring every x-villain possible. Exodus, Mystique and Sinister are teamed up for something... and Magneto's in the mix too. Crazy.

The thing I dislike about the back ups is they're not really going any further back then Age Of Apocalypse. What about that serum Hank used onhimself to mutate his mutation. Wikipedia sums it up as 'Hank isolates a "hormonal extract" that allows anyone to become a mutant for a short period of time'. Wouldn't that be a valuable tool? Or what about the genetic stimulator that Mesmero and Machinesmith used on Lorna Dane? The back ups just seem ill researched to me, since the Beast's actions are hardly shocking in light of the fact he collaborated with Mister Sinister in the process of finding a cure for the Legacy Virus.
Oh and I almost missed the fact that Vargas was killed. Cool.

Alamagordo was pre-AoA - not by a lot though. Maybe they're afraid to get into silver age psuedosciencey stuff. There also aren't as many dangling plotthreads before the mid-80s.

Wolverine # 56 was the fucking Cat's Pajamas.
Seriously, the best issue of Wolverine in a long time. (And i loved Mark Millar and Marc Guggenheims prior runs)
Jason Aaron was the fill-in writer and if this book is any indication of his skills he's going to be BIG. Plus Howard Chaykin continues to bring his A-Game (Blade how i miss you already :( )
Go fucking read it now!
Astonishing X-Men meanwhile continues to kick ass, but i'll agree i couldn't give 2 shits about the Breakworld and at this point i just don't want to see anyone die before Joss Whedon and John Cassaday move on. I don't know what the hell Cyclop's is thinking though with this "plot" of his :? Maybe it's all an Emma Frost illusion or something?
X-Men # 202 continues it's strong run as of late and i'm actually loving Humberto Ramos stuff here. Still pissed at this horrible Cable's dead storyline though. (If he is, this is the WORST death of all-time anywhere period) The evil Gambit storyline is the pits too since it doesn't make a lick of sense but i'll try to be patient with that one.

It's had a great 100 issue run but the concept is tired and the book is so far under the radar, why bother anymore?
The X-Books need to focus on their core line and at least TRY to wrest the number 1 franchise title back from the Avengers.

Astonishing X-Men
Uncanny X-Men

X-Factor
New X-Men
X-Force
Excalibur
Wolverine
Wolverine : Origins
Ultimate X-Men
X-Men : First Class
which admittedly is pretty similar to what's actually coming. I'd add Cable to X-Force naturally, while Cable & Deadpool,New Excalibur and Exiles and uh the upcoming Cable get the axe.

Amen, i love X-Men plus it's been running since 1991. Hell i still remember picking up that fabled first Chris Claremont/Jim Lee classic way back when.
My X-Book List would be something like...
Astonishing X-Men
Uncanny X-Men
X-Men
X-Factor
New X-Men
X-Force
Excalibur
That list looks pretty good to me. Though my overwhelming dislike for Wolverine makes me want to will those books out of existence, but I know it'll never happen. And I'm still pissed that they're canning C&D

Astonishg sells way too much plus Marvel has already announced that Ellis and Bionche are taking over that book. New X-Men is easily one of my favorite books out there right now so I really don't want to see it go(It was bad enough when Marvel announced that Cable/Deadpool was cancelled, still hoping that Deadpool winds up in X-Factor)
I don't want to see either of those books go, either. But if by some bizarre occurrence it came down between those two and X-Men, I would off those two in a heartbeat.

Hey everyone. Thought this would be a good place to ask.
I dipped my head into the entire Marvel universe, but its just too much for me. But I have always loved the X-men. I've read New X-men (Morrison), House of M, Deadly Genesis, and read both Astonishing and X-Factor currently.
Should I get into Bru's and Carey's books? The Messiah Complex has me very interested. If I did decide to jump in, are the two new HC's (their first respective arcs) the best place to start?

Personally, I don't think Brubaker's is very good. Definitely not worth the full price HC.
I'd recommend Carey's though, if:
You prefer the action stuff over the soap opera stuff.
You have a healthy knowledge of late 80's/early 90's X-mythology.
You don't mind Bachalo/Ramos art.
If so, it's pretty damn good and worth picking up.

Carey's and Bru's runs are interesting. Lots of people love them and just as many seem to hate them. People have complained that Bru's opening 12-issue arc was too slow and didn't play to Bru's strengths. I think it was fun. His second arc (which was five issues and just wrapped up today) was better and more along the lines of Bru's 'normal' writing style. Carey's run has had fantastic plotting and storytelling. The majority of complaints about his run have been on the artistic side. The art duties have been handled by Ramos and Bachalo, two art styles that you either love or hate.
You could go and pick up the trades or you could try just stepping in for the big x-over. I'm not sure how accessible the x-over will be, but I imagine it'll be fairly reader friendly. Personally, I say you should grab the trades as I think the work they've both been doing is great (especially Carey).

Carey's X-Men is closer to the Authority than the more traditional X-stuff. What character development he puts in there is good, but it's secondary to teh exxxplosions.
Basically, this ain't the book where you're gonna see softball games or Nightcrawler having a pity party.

Apocalypse is apparently back (or dead again, I might pick up Blood of Apocalypse since I'm a sucker for that character and I heard the Cable Deadpool stuff was pretty excellent)

Both have their powers back. Magneto got his back in New Avengers: the Colective & Xavier got his back via the M'Krann Crystal at the end of Bru's space story.
Quicksilver nolonger is in posession of the Terregen myst crystals, so he can't give the power back. Layla Miller has no powers beond knowing stuff. (she had fire powers pre-Decimation.)

That was the (I think unsubstationiated) claim of her's in X-Factor. Her former teacher may have confirmed it but at the same time there was something off about her, maybe, too. I'm not sure I buy that Layla isn't lying.
And Magneto doesn't have his powers. Well, actually the last issue of Uncanny said he did, but he was believed to be depowered after M-Day (and believed so himself)

You're right, I didn't read the interview with Ed....
However, in the Collective, the entire point of the Collective going to Genosha and finding Magneto was to give him back his powers, so...

I'm looking forward to seeing Brubaker's take, seeing as how he's really good at the 'noir' type books. Also, Mike Carey should write a good Layla Miller, and I already know he can write a good Madrox, not only from the Endangered Species one-shot, but because the dude's a great writer.

So the new X-Factor was awesome. I like how Huber has ties to pretty much everything that's happened since the first issue of the series. Cool new villain with cool powers and great motivation. Also, something revealed about mutant powers and Rictor (but not what you'd think).
Endangered Species was decent enough, although it wasn't one of the stronger chapters (other than the art, Andrea Divito is awesome). It makes sense that Hank would want to see what alternate versions of himself were able to accomplish, but it just didn't really do it for me.

If not, they used to be the grown-up New Mutants, led by Cable. They were like the X-Men, but more of a militia than superheroes. They were outlaws, even considered terrorists by some, but were still the good guys. They featured members like the aforementioned Cable, Domino, Feral, Warpath, Cannonball, Meltdown, Shatterstar, Siryn, Rictor, Sunspot, and Caliban, among others.
It looks like after Messiah Complex, at least two new x-books are going to launch. Cable, with art by Ariel Olivetti, and a new X-Force, with art by Clayton Crain. The early line-up for X-Force looks like Wolverine, X-23, Warpath, Hepzibah, Wolfsbane, and Caliban.

 I'm totally digging Young's art on this book. On other books it wouldn't work, but his style seems to suit New X-Men perfectly. And Kyle/Yost have found ways of making each character into their own individual which is something Weir/Defillippis never did (at least for the background students). I was skeptical at first (When I saw who the remaining students were), but all of the students are their own individuals and I can see ANY of them staying in the X-Universe for a long time. (Kinda like New Mutants in the 80's) I think the biggest improvement they've made was Rockslide. I HATED Rockslide originally, but they found a way to make him more than just Thing Jr.

START READING NEW X-MEN!!! No real backstory is needed for these characters. It's a great way to get into the X-Universe minus all the super confusion . . . though that may change as they are part of the Messiah Complex thing.
I was kind of upset after Decimation when most of my favorite characters from the book were removed from the cast

I was too, but I love what Kyle/Yost have done with the book since then. I've got a whole new crew of favorite characters now.

I've been thinking of picking up New X-men (after House of M where Yost and crew begin it, issue 20 me thinks).
As for Messiah Complex, I hope it will rock, and it very well could, but Marvel seems to have some problems with handling storytelling post event (see House of M - Decimation).

Their run starts out a little slow (#20-22) But starts to pick up at #23 and just keeps going. You get Nimrod, William Stryker, and a even Belasco and a Super Creepy Demonchild (Magik/Illyana Rasputin) along with tons of really cool new characters who have promising futures in the MU.

So I'm in the middle of X-Statix and this book is just amazing on every level. Milligan really knocked this one out of the park. I actually only have the two X-Force trades and the first X-Statix trade, and since all the trades are either out of print, or don't match each other visually at all, I've decided just to get all the single issues and have them custom hardcover bound into three volumes. I can't wait to finish this series.
I also dug Milligan's Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, which has me wondering if I should give his X-men run a shot, at least his last arc with Apocalypse.

Personally I really disliked Milligan's run on the book, and I've heard the same from a lot of fans of his X-Staix work.

It stunk. Really Stunk. I wanted to like it but . . . it was just MEH. It was better than austen's but that's not really saying much is it?

Austen's run wasn't that bad. At least it felt like there something was going on during his run. The Northstar issue, Juggernaught joining the X-Men, Icarus, and Austen's final arc were all better than anything in Milligan's run IMO.

Yeah, Austen's (VERY few) good issues are quite nicely hidden inside all the crap. Worth tracking them down in singles only.

Was Milligan's run really that bad? I haven't read it myself, but Chuck Austen's run was...really, really bad. Dominant Species, Holy War, The Draco, and the marriage issues with Havoc and Polaris were really poor on plot execution and characterization, to say the least.

Yes it was.
Austen and Milligan were about neck-and-neck in quality, with Austen's horrendous moments taking the cake. Milligan didn't do anything utterly offensive.

Maybe I'm not the best person to ask since I thought Austen's run wasn't horrible (although the parts you mentioned were).
Milligan does some things to kind of mend what Austen did to a few of the characters. I found that during his run the character's weren't that distinctive. He also has a few odd decisions he makes with characters (Doop, Mystique, Polaris, etc.)
Its not that its necessarily badly written for the most part, its just one of the dullest comic runs I've read.

Austen's shining moments outdid his bad. I honestly can't say there was an arc or even a single issue of Milligan's I enjoyed.

Yeah.
Maybe Milligan just works better with his own characters then. I dunno. It just sorta sucks, the Apocalypse post House of M arc should have everything I would like about the X-men (the horrendous villain coming to the aid of all mutants at the expense of humanity) but from what I hear its just not worth reading.

The only good part I ever noticed was just the ONE Panel where Lorna makes herself some Magneto-esque Armor. And that one frame was the only part I liked. And it was just for the art.

No it doesn't. Winnick set up something awesome with the Characters. Then Austen made the Exiles meet the X-Men in some lame crossover. It was just not good. Weapon X and Exiles where good enough teams.
Did anyone ever read the Mutant X series, with Havok running the team in an alternate reality?
I read the Annual and the last Issue and it.....wasn't good. At least the writing wasn't. I have heard nothing but bad things about it but other than that it really isn't noteworthy enough to look up.
