Good. Cruise would have sucked any goodness that could have possibly come from that film.

The only role I'd like him in would be the Comedian, mainly because he'd be dead five minutes in.

Was he even being considered for a part? I had never heard anything about this... Either way it's good because I can't see him as anyone in Watchmen.

Yeah, keep those good actors away!

More like keep the box office poison away. Cruise is approaching Mel Gibson and Kramer territory. I know MANY women who will never see another movie with him in it due to some of his views. Not to mention he becomes more of a cartoon daily. And IMO I would call him an adequate actor with the occasional good role. Besides, who exactly would he have played?

Isn't it a tad early to say that Cruise, Gibson and Kramer are box office poison? Since their recent events all we have had is Cruise in a $400m WW movie and Gibson directing a foreign language movie with no stars to $100m WW.

Has Tom Cruise even have a movie that made less than $100 million dollars in the last decade?

Magnolia
Eyes Wide Shut
and that's about it.

Yeah he's Box Office DEATH!!!

I'd actually have been okay with him as Ozymandias, despite my general dislike of the man's work. It's the sort of role that's right in his range, but against type. He would have been just fine in it. I heard at one point that Jude Law was trying like hell for the part--I think he'd be a decent choice, too.

Strange to hear Snyder's filming the pirate stuff. Huh.

Good or bad, after watching this film I may never watch another comic movie again. Either it will be amazing and nothing else will live up to it (because it's Watchmen) or it will suck so bad that all my hope for comic book movies may be lost.

No pressure.

Well, Apocalypto was considered a massive flop by pretty well everyone and while it may not have been on target to be a hit BEFORE his incident (though who would have predicted a huge hit out of the Passion) making 100 million worldwide was certainly by all accounts a disaster. I would say it was seriously affected by his outburst.

As for Cruise, well, really? War of the Worlds came out after his thing with Brooke Shields and the couch thing and the weird Scientology birthy stuff? I could have sworn that movie was before all the recent nuttiness. He's certainly not Gibson territory, but I wouldn't consider him B.O. gold anymore either.

I meant MI:3. I'm not sure when WOTW came out in relation.

No. Upon reading it I have changed my view. I wouldn't have minded him in that role at all and it may have been interesting. Either way the article was good (thanks for posting it) and I'm actually excited again for a Watchmen flick.

Cruise as Ozymandias would have been great casting, but my interest in this movie is quite minimal, it's just not going to come close to the comic, which in this case means everything

I still wish Greengrass would have gotten it. He seems a better fit for the tone. Snyder's a better visionary, but the tone of the material has to be respected first. I hope Snyder doesn't write it, as well.

I'm happy it's going to be R-rated and from the sound of it, Snyder's aiming for a pretty faithful adaption.

As far as casting, I think Jude Law would've been good as Veidt. Personally, I'd love to see them get John Cusack for Dreiberg. And I know they were talking about Daniel Craig as Rorschach for a while, which would've kicked ass but I would imagine he's a lot busier now post-Bond.

uh, last time i checked they were keeping an over rated "actor" (and i use that term very loosely away

Yeah, keep those good actors away!

He's not a bad actor, but I don't think he's necessarily right for the role -- even if he brought his A-game.

Plus, his recent bouts of public ass-hattery sort casts a pall over any project he works on these days. A lot of people might have a hard time taking him seriously.

Does your mother know that you are gay?

See, now regardless of whether you answer "yes" or "no," you will be admitting to homosexuality! You, sir, have fallen victim to one of the great logic traps of our times.

Interesting that he's filming the pirate stuff. I would've thought that the pirate story would've been axed to make room for more plot. That alone makes me think the movie will be better than it has a right to be.

I think the problem with someone of Cruise's stature playing Ozymandis is that it kind of sets up the end. By having a big named actor in such a minimal role means that he has to do some sort of bad ass thing to justify the casting. Which would allow a lot of people to predict the ending in a way that should be a surprise for the movie going audience.

Yes...very interesting...as is his insistance in setting it in 1985 and having an R rating against the studio's wishes.

Glad they nixed Cruise. Sad they are keeping it in 85 and keeping the Pirate comic book crap

Honestly, the only person out there that needs to play the Comedian is Bruce Campbell. He can do serious if he needs to. And he's the right age for it now. The only other person I could think of that would have been perfect for it would be Robert Culp, who's TOO old for it now.

That he's filming the pirate stuff in no way guarantees it will end up in the theater release. The pirate sideline is pretty much the stuff that DVD Extras are made of. They'll re-edit that crap out when the first test audience goes "That was great except for that weird pirate comic stuff. What was that about?"

Could Watchmen be anything but R rated? Really...:-?

When's the movie slated for release?

This...

When Watchmen the comic came out, it was in many ways a critique and deconstruction of the superhero genre in general. When Watchmen the film started percolating, almost 20 years ago, movie audiences hadn’t been immersed in superhero films yet. “That’s the cool part about it, for me anyway. Your movie audience is basically where your comic book audience was when the graphic novel was written – you’re basically in a place where you can make a satirical comment about a superhero and the audience will get it, because they have the frame of reference.”

is the only good reason I've ever heard for trying to make a Watchmen movie. I kind of like that...
