***WARNING!!! This post contains SPOILERS for MS. MARVEL #12!!!! If you do not wish to be spoiled, please do not read any further!!! You have been warned!!!!
The first year of MS MARVEL comes to an end, as we wrap up the Doomsday Man two parter.
Wonder Man phones Carol to ask her out...and ends up getting Anya instead. Poor Simon isn't having much luck, is he? Last week he got interrupted by Gavin's reality warping stunt before he could ask Carol out, and now he's accidentally hitting on teenagers. Meanwhile, Carol is making out with another guy. If Wondy wants to have any shot in this love triangle, he is gonna need to step up his game a bit.
Wondy is also not having much luck in the superhero department in this issue. Anya asks him to come help out against Doomsday Man...but by the time he shows up, the fight is over. Hopefully sooner or later Wonder Man will actually be able to participate in one of Carol's battles--he somehow vanished during the fight between Carol and Arachne in #8, he was unconscious for the action in the Special, and now he misses the fight here.
Interesting that A.I.M. had Targoths; zombies aren't their usual style...I wonder if they were actually involved in their creation, or if they simply stole the technology from the Slorenians.
Carol gets infected by the Targoths...but before the infection can take over, whatever mysterious people have been whispering in her dream sequences for the last several issues activate some implant inside her and eliminate the infection. Still no clues as to who these people are, or what they've done to Carol and why. I'm still suspecting it may have something to do with Cru, and the slash he made in her arm back in #3. We'll see.
Arana gets an impressive moment when she manages to take down the Targoth army by herself! Not bad for our rookie sidekick. Unfortunately for her, she follows it up by nearly getting killed by Doomsday Man!
This leads Carol to really cut loose and actually manage to rip Korman out of the Doomsday Man! Korman survives...and Carol is disturbed to find she isn't happy about that. But on the plus side, it looks like she may have finally destroyed the Doomsday Man, so that's a good thing.
The A.I.M. agent from last issue reappears, meeting with a secret A.I.M. council who want to eliminate MODOK. Clearly, there is more to this guy than meets the eye--from the sound of things, he isn't an A.I.M. agent at all. So who is he, and what is he up to?
As for this power struggle within A.I.M., it looks like this is something Carol is going to end up dragged into. Will this A.I.M. council be trying to manipulate Carol into eliminating MODOK for them?
Sarah Day returns after an extended absence--I was starting to wonder if she'd been dropped from the series. This was quite an interesting little scene, with some intrigue for two members of out supporting cast. First off, we have Sarah reading some book with strange, unidentified symbols. What the heck is that about?? I've suspected for a while that there was more to Ms Day than meets the eye, and this just reinforces it.
Sarah gets a file of information about William Wagner, which leads her to describe him as "very interesting". But as far as we know, he is a simple restaurant owner...so what is it about him that is so "interesting"?
Sarah's comments about needing to deal with William sooner rather than later sounded so ominous. Presumably she's just talking about the need to be prepared to deal with media questions about his relationship to Carol...but the way Sarah said it, it sounds like more than that.
And then the issue ends with Carol attempting to visit Anya in the hospital, and having a run-in with her extremely pissed off father. Carol is going to have a very hard time earning back his trust after this. Unfortunately, whether he likes it or not, he won't be able to get rid of Carol that easily, since Anya is now registered and required by law to be trained.
But this issue ends on a really sad note for Carol, not only dealing with the guilt over Anya's injuries, but also confronting the darkness in her own psyche.
This was Rob De La Torre's last issue, and I think he went out on a really strong note--this was some of his best work on the series to date. And Patrick Zircher did a great job of helping out for the last 3rd of the book. His style actually worked so well with De La Torre's that it actually took me a few pages to realize we'd switched artists.
Good luck to Robero on IRON MAN, and I look forward to Aaron Lopresti's arrival next issue (and if Aaron ever needs a month off, maybe Patrick could do some more fill-in work!).
