Rank your HBO shows.
My favorite is THE SOPRANOS, but I've recently watched CARNIVALE and am sad to hear of its demise. ENTOURAGE is also a great show and OZ is okay so off the strength of these I ordered ROME.
But I think I've heard you talk about THE WIRE.
1. The Sopranos
2. Carnivale
3. Entourage
4. Oz
*Not sure where Rome will fall.
What are your thoughts on DEADWOOD? EXTRAS?
I saw the first season of Sex and the City and started the second, but grew wearyand bored of it. Just not for me.

Sorry, man, I think the current season of Rome trumps this last season of the Sopranos...

That is correct. But you know, every HBO show is so different, I forget why I like them until they are on. ROME is on now, and I can't remember why DEADWOOD was so good. I'm in ancient Rome now. I'm not ready for gunfights. But Sopranos, while uneven, is still my favorite show, because I've been involved with those characters for so long, I really miss them when they're away. As much as I think ROME is an amazing television show, I am more anxious for the last 9 eps of SOPRANOS than I am for anything else.

Yeah, but Sopranos have had more great seasons than Rome existed so NYAH!

The End of the List.
I saw an episode of Deadwood and couldn't get into it, seems like the type of show you need to start from the beginning to get what's going on.

I'd agree, but it's well worth it. The first episode has one of the greatest character introductions (Calamity Jane's) ever.

CARNIVALE Season 1 and 2 - Just watched this series these last two weekends (hence it being dubbed my Weekend of Sloth) and I have to say I'm really impressed with this show, I love the time period, the atmosphere, the characters, and the concept. It's a shame HBO decided to cancel it when Knauf had so much story left to tell.
One thing I don't understand is why this series, even though it retails for the same as their other original series is always more expensive, it's never discounted as much as Sopranos, Rome, etc.
So who's seen it and what di dyou think of the ending? 'd really like to get more insight provided by Knauf; I listened to the commentary, but it was horrible and provided no explanations.
Maybe a CARNIVALE comic? ;)

Because it's not as popular as those series, and retailers want to get as much as they can out of the few people buying it. They can afford a slight price break on the more popular series, as those on the fence will be more likely to buy it.

Has anyone seen Band of Brothers? Just picked up the collection and I plan to watch it this week. I guess what I'm trying to say is....what about BoB? Eh? Eh? You like what I did there?

Band Of Brothers is fantastic. I think you'll enjoy it, especially if you're a WW2 buff. It takes you all over the war in Europe, all of the important fronts, and it's full of great moments. Really, I'd like to see it for the first time again too. Everything comes to life, and it's entertaining as hell.

I was indifferent to WW2 until I got into a game called Battlefield: 1942, one of my favorite games of all time. I played that thing almost every day for over a year.
Now I love WW2 shows and movies. It's really cool seeing all these real-life vehicles and guns that I used so much in that game. Plus it's always fun to see Nazis get their asses kicked. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

YES! And it is amazing! I wish I owned the box set, but can't justify buying it when I've already seen it.

But they might sell more if they sold it at the same price as Rome and others. If I'm looking to buy an HBO original series and it's between Deadwood, Carnivale, and Rome I'll probably go with the better priced box set you know.

I have always been a war movie fan. My mom watched WWII and Vietnam movies when I was growing up.

I still havn't seen alot of those. I intend to get Carnivale and The Wire eventually, maybe Oz.
Rome is an amazing show though, love it. I liked the first season of Deadwood alot but the last 2 lost me. Curb Your Enthusiasm got a bit old too, but it was excellent.

Keep in mind, I haven't seen Carnivale, Deadwood, Extras, and a few others.

I was watching Oz and was enjoying it, but there was something about the look or production that kept me from falling in love with it like The Sopranos and Carnivale.

OZ sucks. I watched the first two seasons and quit. All I want to see is story and prison violence. That bastard in the wheelchair with his Aesops Fabley morals and beat poetry ruins it for me. It goes from being a super violent prison drama to something embarrassingly pleading to be considered art, like a stage production.
I wish someone would edit him out of the show.

I think at this point I'd only buy the rest of Oz if they were heavily discounted.
And I do think the guy in the wheelchair adds an odd element to the show.

I just found out that Rome is only two seasons long.
I like this show, but the pacing is a little too quick at times. Sometimes YEARS pass between episodes.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a very funny show, much better than Seinfeld, but after season 3 it starts to fall apart a little.

Agreed! I still can't fathom why anyone would call The Wire the best HBO series. I mean, it's okay, but compared to DEADWOOD, SIX FEET UNDER or SOPRANOS, it sucks. I have the first three seasons on DVD, and I'm really trying to enjoy it, but I don't. Go figure.

I guess it's just my lack of taste. But the characters are filthy, corrupt, and without a shred of appeal. The story lines are only semi-involving, and it makes me feel kind of mopey and bored. I like those black kids and their drug business. They're the only interesting part of the show. The cops are morons.

You know, the last time I checked, Preacher was still "a go" over at HBO. I really hope they decide to continue with production. That series reeks HBO, and has all the foul language, gratuitious violence, and sacreligiousness we could all enjoy!
Oooooorrr it could completely flop. One or the other.

Honestly, I think a lot of people choose The Wire because it is the lesser known of the series.
I've not watched Six Feet Under or Deadwood (plan to), but The Sopranos is HEADS AND SHOULDERS above The Wire, but I enjoyed the first season well enough that I plan on asking for Season 3 for my birthday.

I bet you were telling everyone about it and how good it was before anyone even heard about The Wire. GO AHEAD! SAY IT. :D
