It felt like an interesting story, poorly directed. It felt as if the actors were only told what their scenes would be about mere seconds before filming.

And then , the third act came and everybody said "oh, shit! We have 3 minutes left and -- what do we do?!" So they just said "all those scenes you know are coming anyway? Just pretend like they happened so we can get to a really interesting ending that gives the second half of the season a lot of promise."

Yeah, there was a lot of weird disconnect in it. Still had some good moments, and yeah, definitely shook things up for the rest of the season...

As usual, they can't help themselves from jamming too much in an episode. They admit they leave alot on the editing room floor. Too bad the DVDs can't have the extra scenes.

I thought this weeks episode was great. Really rocking. But I'm total.y not interested in next weeks from the preview. More love triangle (Quadrangle I guess) stuff with Starbuck and Apollo.

They've really gone a long way towards wrecking Starbuck's character for me. What happened to the balls-to-the-wall fighter jock we all loved som much in the first season? I understand she's been through the trials of Job and all, but c'mon, she's supposed to be THE HERO! Can we not have one character who isn't completely self destructive and morose? Can't it be her?

Please?

*sigh*

From what I know (or at least think I know) of the next episode, it's interesting that they used that in the preview, as it doesn't have very much to do with the episode. Also, weren't they a lot shorter than usual? I wonder if some of the preview was cut to allow the episode to run a little longer.

I learned long ago never to watch previews for two reasons. Either they completely misrepresent the show you're about to watch (the luchador episode of Angel had one of the worst previews ever and was one of the best episodes of that series), or they spoil everything about the episode (Battlestar this season, showing Lee sacrifice the Pegasus, which doesn't happen until late in the 3rd act of that episode and is, in fact, the big surprise moment of that episode).

I still think Twin Peaks had the best previews, with the way they used audio and video from two different scenes.

yeah, im in the same boat. I just started watching them in high def on the universal hd channel. I really like the 1st 2 or 3 that i have watched so far. I think i will just keep watching them there and see how it goes.

im doing the same thing with Firefly. man this show is great (yeah i know im way late, why didnt anyone just tell me it was like a live action cowboy bebop? overly simple i know but it would have worked) and it looks amazing in HD.

I don't think, even in its weakest episode, Battlestar has ever been a bad show. A misguided, uneven show at times, but never bad. Overall, it's fun enough that I keep coming back to it. I often find I'm interested in where its going without ever really caring what will happen when it gets there. I think it was when Miracle Cylon Baby Blood cured cancer and I realized the show had no balls that I quit caring about the fate of any of the characters. There's not a character on the show that is in any real danger (of any sort) in the long run. That's what I always liked about Buffy. You had the sense that everyone was fair game at some level.

This is what makes The Shield so good. With the exception of Mackey, there aint no one that can't go down any given moment.

And ya know, honestly, I don't know if he'll even make it out of the last episode alive. And that's why I love it so.

Yeah, I fear for him for the end of the series, but during the series I always knew he'd be "fine". Where "fine" means not dead and not rotting in jail permanently, but possibly stuck doing desk duty, or having to get fisted from his boss regularly to keep things quiet, or the like.

My money would be on him not making it. I suspect some degenerate Shield watching in my near future as a prelude to the next DVD release.

I'm about four episodes behind now, but I don't agree with that idea entirely. They're unlikely to -kill- anyone, it's true, but the things they're willing to drag their characters through despite that one point of restraint are impressive. I really enjoy the character arcs, especially this season with Colonel Tigh. Watching his progression leaves you wondering how he could possibly get out of it. That he DOES get out of it seems inevitable, but the journey itself is remarkable, and the risk of actually dying along the way doesn't add anything to that for me. Not for this show, at least.

The Shield, though. Whoa.

My problems with Battlestar have less to do with danger to the principle characters than with the rehashing of ideas. Part of this I suspect is that I want to watch it on DVD and watch a bunch of eps together, which means there isn't time for me to forget that the same damned thing happened like six times in the season.

On the other hand for all my bitching about BSG, I don't think there's been a single episode that's been devoid of something worthwhile. There were several episodes of season 2 where only the Balthar loonytunes plot thread kept me going, but that thread was worth it.

Don't work in TV but have wtached a lot of TV (okay, too much at times) and I stand by no. And my clinical depression is thanking me for the decision.

Just watched it. Pretty fantastic Baltar stuff.

But... Caprica Six? Where did she go? And why did we get teased for the whole hour with "extra scene" just to see that clearly she got edited for time? Sloppy.

Busman
01-29-2007, 02:02 PM
Yeah the extra scene crap sucked. The Baltar stuff was awesome. As was the Lee/Kara stuff. It was truncated for Baltar somewhat (as I suspect the Caprica 6 stuff was), but it was still some great moments.

My guess, Baltar's stuff was so rockin' they went long on it and squeezed everything else.

Saw last Sundays last night off the Tivo. They clearly still write 90 minute episodes and condense it down to 60 minutes. Which, A, always means they never have a lull in the show, and B, sometime have plot arcs get ignored for an entire episdode (ala Caprica 6). Which isn't a good thing. The end result is that it is an insurance against having a bad show, but makes it harder to have a really cohesive, fantastic show.

But all in all, it is a good show. Especially when you take in the fact that the entire show is done for only about 1.8 million per episode.
