I told myself not to like Firefly

I told myself not to!

Didn't like Buffy, didn't like Angel, and the last thing I wanted to be was a fan of Joss Whedon and become one of his cronies....you know...

Whedonites? :shifty:

It makes me sick to think I would join their ranks, or even agree with their tastes! But OOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NO. Upon heavy insisting of a couple friends I gave the series a try and Goddamn if it ain't one of the best TV series I have ever seen. The characters, the script, the plot and setting all are so fucking good it brings tears to my eyes.

I hate myself for loving the shit out of this show!

Fuck you bastards

Hahaha! Nope, I already tried Buffy and Angel and I didn't like it.

I'M NOT A WHEDONITE! I just...you know...like Firefly. Wanna be clear on this! It's like how I'm not a Yankees fan but I like Don Mattingly and Mickey Mantle, you know? Just like that. :shifty:

you say that now, but it'll work on you. slowly, like a fungus. you'll start thinking, well i DO like this one show a hell of a lot, maybe i was wrong about the others.

then, you'll find yourself catching the odd episode on FX.

it's not far from having sig pics of all the whedon characters, after that.

(incidentally, have you watched "serenity"?)

I fucking HATE Buffy, but I started watching Angel from the beginning and fell in love with it. There is a lot of Claremont/Byrne era X-Men-type storytelling in there.

Firefly, I grew to love on DVD. I'm just sorry a great flick like Serenity didn't do better at the box office. I really think they had a shitty advertising campain.

I agree. I was not a fan of Buffy or Angel for anything other than the chicks on there. Firefly as a really good show.

interesting. i thought buffy hit its stride about halfway through season two, and had some damn good episodes. haven't had the chance to watch angel, though. :(

as for serenity, they were done through universal, which i've become convinced in recent years, can't advertise their films for shit. (mallrats immediately springs to mind, and i'm sure if i think about it i could find a few more)

Each subsequent show has taken less time to find its legs.

Buffy got there about halfway through season 2. Angel, about halfway into season 1. And Firefly more or less hit the ground running.

Relax relax. Liking Firefly but not liking the rest of Whedon's shows does not make you a Whdonite. The same way someone who likes Star Trek doesn't have to like other versions of Star Trek, Andromeda, Earth: Final Conflict or any of Roddenberry's other stuff. They're Trekkies. Not Roddenberrians. (Roddenberrites?)

Consequently, you are not a Whedonite. You're a BROWNCOAT. ^_^

Buffy doesn't get any better than it is in season 2? Crap. I just finished Season 3 (which I thought was pretty good, but I just don't LOVE the show like many of you) and I was hoping it'd get better. Ah well.

As for Universal movies that should have done better, I'll throw in a MST3K: The Movie.

That movie should have been HUGE in theaters (in my opinion).

So why was it that Firefly couldn't continue on TV? Just didn't get the ratings, or the money? Or both?

Thinking about it though, I think if it continued on for many years some of the characters might get watered down.

IIRC, partly it was due to airing on friday nights. that's kind of a graveyard for shows regardless. i think if the show had been on sundays, or some other weekday, it would have done better.

so ratings were a part of it. also, the fact that fox didn't air the episodes in order (or all of them, for that matter) didn't help either. (episode 2 started the season, and the pilot was the last episode shown, i believe)

No shit? Man, that's pathetic if they couldn't even get the episodes straight. Oh well :dunno:

it wasn't a matter of getting them straight, as it was fox just being jackasses. (again, take this with a grain of salt, my memory of these things isn't precise) they didn't like the pilot, and so joss and crew had to write episode 2 to be somewhat pilotish. after that, i don't remember exactly what episodes aired and which ones didn't.

(this is from wikipedia):

Variety magazine cited several actions by the FOX network that contributed to the low ratings, most notably the fact that FOX aired the episodes out of chronological order, making the plot more difficult to follow, and occasionally preempted the show for sporting events.[55] For instance, the two-hour episode "Serenity" was intended to be the series' premiere episode, and therefore contained most of the character introductions and back-story. However, FOX decided that "Serenity" was unsuitable to open the series, and the episode, "The Train Job", was specifically created to act as a new pilot.[10] In addition, Firefly was promoted as an action-comedy rather than the more serious character study it was intended to be.

Aaaahhhhh okay. Thanks for that, dude.

Figures. I don't watch a lot of TV (don't have cable and can't even get the basic channels) but I get the notion Fox has a tendency to make these wonderful shows and then either fuck it up or toss 'em to the curb.
