Just finished reading this book last night.

Anyone else read it recently? What a strange book... I didn't much enjoy the overall arc of the story, I thought it was boring and I couldn't wait for them to dive into the 'poem' parts of the story -- some of those 'poems' were freakin' genius!

it seems to be a pretty unpopular book, even among palahniuk fans, but i absolutely loved it. easily my favorite book he's written.

and you're definitely right about the poems. they are fantastic, especially the last one.

the one about Venus and the goth boy? yea, that was great. I also love the first one, the one about masturbating in the pool.

he's got such a way of describing things/situation that I just can't compare to anyone else (in a good way)

i honestly can't remember which poem it actually was (the book's at my house and i'm back up at the dorms), but it's the one that has the "let us all be haunted" line in it.

Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey

Rant takes the form of a (fictional) oral history of Buster "Rant" Casey, in which an assortment of friends, enemies, admirers, detractors, and relations have their say on this evil character, who may or may not be the most efficient serial killer of our time.

Buster Casey was every small kid born in a small town, searching for real thrills in a world of video games and action/adventure movies. The high school rebel who always wins (and a childhood murderer?), Rant Casey escapes from his hometown of Middleton for the big city and becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing, where on designated nights, the participants recognize each other by dressing their cars with tin-can tails, "Just Married" toothpaste graffiti, and other refuse, then look for designated markings in order to stalk and crash into each other. It's in this violent, late-night hunting game that Casey meets three friends. And after his spectacular death, these friends gather the testimony needed to build an oral history of his short life. Their collected anecdotes explore the charges that his saliva infected hundreds and caused a silent, urban plague of rabies....

Expect hilarity and horror, and blazing insight into the desperate and surreal contemporary human condition as only Chuck Palahniuk can deliver it. He's the postmillennial Jonathan Swift, the visionary to watch to learn what's —uh-oh—coming next.

I'm still reading through it. I recently rediscovered it in paperback. I like the glow in the dark cover.

It's not my favorite of his, but it reads well enough. I like the story with the bouncing bowling ball of death.

I wish I had a knack to write like him.

I've read this book, my sister is a big fan and insisted I read it! If I am honest, I didn't really like it that much, but I guess thats cause I like different types of books to what she does!

Haunted is the one Palahniuk book that I couldn't finish. I hated it. I have all of his other books and adore his writing, but this... First Diary, then Haunted... I'm really hoping Rant reverses this trend.

probably my least favorite of his books (favorite being invisible monsters). that said, i picked it up at the airport before going to WWC last summer, and read it during the delay. one of the few books (aside from american psycho) that has gotten me to audibly gasp while reading it.

It was funny. He mentioned how before he had a chance to get the stories down on paper, he would pray before going on a plane and say "Please, God, let me make it through this flight so I can get these 3 masturbation stories published."

I got about 30 pages in to HAUNTED before giving up, and I tried to read DIARY twice, but couldn't get past page 50 either time.

Both really surprising, because everything that came before those two I absolutely loved. I haven't picked up his Stranger than Fiction book, and I may give the new one I heard about a few pages ago a shot, but man, DIARY and HAUNTED I hated.

Oh well. No one bats 1000 forever.

Says who? I love it. Palahniuk is best when he goes full out. It's books like lullaby when he plays it middle of the road that sucks.

There was nothing to the stories. They seem as though they were written to intentionally shock and one-up-another on disgustingness. The characters and plots aren't as developed as well as short stories should be. He also relies so heavily on his usual writing methods that all the stories sound the same and don't feel original.
